If ATL trades Ryan a full 27% of their entire cap is dead money paying Matt to play for someone else ($49M) - then there's also the $11M dead already on their books. For comparison - the most total dead money a team has taken in a season in NFL history was LAR last year at $38.4M. Don't think that's going to happen.

Matt Ryan has a big cap number for the 2021 season and the Atlanta Falcons are currently projected to have negative $24 million in cap space next season. Thomas Dimitroff did a terrible job of managing the cap and now the next regime has a lot of work to do.

With any player’s contract there are six moves teams can execute to change the cap figure for the season:

  • Cut pre-June 1
  • Cut post-June 1
  • Trade pre-June 1
  • Trade post-June 1
  • Restructure
  • Extension
If the Atlanta Falcons were to cut Matt Ryan before June 1st, they would have $49 Million in dead money and lose $9 Million in cap space. With the Falcons already in negative $24 million in cap space, this is an unlikely scenario.

The Atlanta Falcons could make Matt Ryan the June 1st cut they would save $17 Million in cap space but have $24 Million in dead money. This move could work but the Atlanta Falcons would have a total of $30 Million dead cap space and would have to make a lot more moves to get under the cap.

Trading Matt Ryan to start the offseason would not be likely. If the Atlanta Falcons traded Ryan before June 1st, they would lose $3 Million in dead cap space and have $44 Million in dead money. Many fans think this is a no brainer, but this would be a disaster for the Atlanta Falcons cap situation.

If the Atlanta Falcons traded Matt Ryan post-June 1st it would have the same cap figures as a June 1st cut. They would save $17 Million in cap space but would have $24 Million in dead money.

The only logical way to move on from Matt Ryan.

All these moves are not likely but there is one more move the Atlanta Falcons could execute but the backlash from fans would be catastrophic. They could dump Matt Ryan’s contract with a team like the Houston Texans did with Brock Osweiler’s contract.

During the 2017 NFL offseason, the Houston Texans dumped Osweiler’s contract to the Cleveland Browns but also give up a second-round pick. The only compensation the Texans received in return is a fourth-round pick and cap space.

This move might be the only way to get rid of Matt Ryan’s contract for the 2021 season.

The best example of a team that would take on Matt Ryan’s contract is the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers are currently projected to have $20 Million in cap space and can open another $24 Million in cap space by making Jimmy Garoppolo the June 1st cut.

Once Matt Ryan is on the 49ers, they could open another $14 Million in cap space by restructuring his contract. For this move to work, however, the Atlanta Falcons would need to send the 49ers draft capital just like the Texans did with the Browns.

What would a team trading for Ryan have on its books?

He's relatively reasonable.
$23m per in the next 2 years if kept but only $5.5m guaranteed.

It's a fantastic contract for the team trading for Ryan, because ATL has to eat so much money to move him (which is why its never going to happen in 2021):

2021: $23M
2022: $23.75M - NO garaunteed $ if cut before 3rd league day
2023: $28M - No gauranteed $ if cut before 3rd league day

Your blog post take on Ryans salary doesn't match Spotrac - designating him as a post 6/1 trade kicks $26.5M of the deadmoney hit from '21 to '22, but limits the deadmoney in '21 to $17.9M - this frees up $23M in cap for ATL this year but comes with that huge anchor in the next season. I guess there could be reasons why you would prefer the hit spread out over 2 years, but since Ryans contract is going to be in the top 51 ( and so ATL has to be under the salary cap *with* his 40.9M cap hit by March 17th) they can't really use that hit as a way to get under the cap - they have to do it with him on the books already. All they can use that money on is to sign FAs that werent able to get a contract in March Free agency, use it to take on salary in trades if they somehow decide they want to rebuild by using draft capital to acquire current nfl players, or roll it over to '22 to reduce the hit that year from 26.5M to 3.5M.

Or they could wait til next season to trade him, free up 15.1M in cap space that year and have no hit on future seasons. Unless someone makes ATL an offer they cant refuse they are almost certainly going to just wait for the '22 offseason before trading Ryan - if thats what they are set on doing.
