This is to talk about reliever matt thornton.

I got into it with a few people including chris rongey on twitter about him not being real good. What do you guys think?

Im going back to the last couple of seasons. Seems like he is a 1 pitch pitcher and when the game is tight in either direction he wets the bed. I get that his ERA was ok but his WHIP is awful the last few years. Rongey brought up the 13th place ranking in regards to WAR among relievers. Im pretty certain there are a lot of guys ranked below him that I would much rather have.

He isn't as good as he is, but he's also getting older.

Last year of his contract, assuming they buy him out. His 10 losses last year were kind of fluky. I think he'll be solid, but won't be the guy he used to be.

Look up his wXRL #'s on fan graphs if you get a chance. IIRC his best suited as a low leverage reliever.

He has his uses and I do think he starts slow but lately over the past two years his blow up potential has been really high.

I love thorton when used properly. He is a setup guy. Not a mop up or closer. When used there Matt is dominant. When used any other way its best to fix a sanbwich.
