I see these stores everywhere but they are always empty.

The CEO of Mattress Firm recently resigned after an admission of "accounting irregularities".

No admittance to a laundering scheme though. Not yet, anyway.

I never put much thought into them being all over the place. I always figured those stores were cheap franchises with low overhead and mega-markups.

Felt that was likely. There’s this TFS in our area in a spot that just was always bad for all businesses that had gone before it. When they first opened up a guy told me that owner was just using it to launder money. 3 years later, I think he was right. That place is always dead. Get maybe 20 customers per day. Some days it’s hard to figure if they’re open or finally shut down for good. No way that business could sustain itself for this long.

Wow, that shit will rot your brain.

Mattress stores use a hybrid satellite storage model. Same like car dealerships(do you have a car warehouse? they are super rare). Except different size product, demands are different, and risk mitigation is different as well(if a big central warehouse gets infested with bed bugs, ouch). Probably some benefit for closer delivery as well.

That's all it is, just a different model for service and storage for mattresses, bed frames, sheets, pillows, box springs. Areas that have more bed bugs generally have more mattress stores.

Why would bed bugs infest new mattress's though?

Family with bed bugs decides to go mattress shopping. They walk into a mattress store, lay on all of the mattresses. Multiply that by whatever number of customers, you're bound to run into issues.
