It was his first year at guard after moving from tackle and he had a great year. I’d prefer a guy like him that can swing to tackle. He’s only 25 years old.

He’d solidify the right side with Darnell Wright and Becton.

No he's not. He's playing on an All Pro OL.

LOL at saying he's better than Smith after one year... He was a bust at OT.

I won't pretend I can say he's better... but he's intriguing. They did perform similarly last year, but Trey has had more consistency. I get the switch to guard for Becton, but that's the risk there. I have to imagine there's some personality issues for the Jets to completely give up on him... and my fear is he was motivated to get a payday and will vanish once he's paid... he may be the next Bears guard to deal with his mom passing regularly.

Trey Smith had his first year as a good pass blocker after a decent 2023 but maybe not good enough for the contract he’s projected to get.

He was a below-average pass blocker though. Fans know which matters more in the Chiefs' offense, so his improvement in the passing game in 2022 was a very welcome development. But, I have seen way too many people asking for a Smith extension. What? He is the fifth-best offensive lineman in Kansas City. NFL teams should rarely make a player in the profile a priority extension. Besides. Smith was far from dominant in the passing game. He gave up 41 pressures in 2023, more than Joe Thuney and Creed Humphrey combined. Smith has that dog in him, but Pro Bowl-level play is a lofty expectation for Smith this season. 3 overrated players on the Kansas City Chiefs 2023 roster

How many guys look better with Lane Johnson next to them?

Halapoulivaati Vaitai and Isaac Seumalo appreciated the paydays, no doubt. I’m sure they’re still playing at a crazy good level and aren’t the result of playing next to a perennial all pro on the best coached OL unit the past 6 years. I’m also sure one’s definitely NOT out of the league and the other a middling OG in Pittsburgh. Brandon Brooks was a scrub in Houston before becoming a 3x probowler with Philly in the late 2010s, but there’s definitely no correlation there…

Beckton won’t be like these guys at all. Especially not with multiple major surgeries on the same knee that ended his seasons in 21 and 22.

To be fair I hate videos that focus on just one game against an opponent. Becton likely has found his home at guard and saying he is only good because he is on Philly is a weak argument that can just as easily be used for Trey Smith with Creed Humphrey next to him and Mahomes as the QB.

I think Becton could be a much more affordable option although Smith is stronger and has more of the temperament you want in a player.

Honestly, people are overrating Trey a lot. It's why I've argued he's not a lock to be re-signed. And as I stated in the Trey thread, he's an average pass blocker... and I'd bet he's getting a little boost from the KC magic that wears off when people leave the team.

For the record, I'll still pay him cause I'm desperate, but I'd brace myself for the threads of people cunting when he has a bad game and trashing Poles for paying him so much.

Creed Humphrey is a Center, the least important position on the OL. Lane Johnson is an OT, much more important. It's a very valid argument especially when you consider Becton was a bust at OT for the Jets and a reclamation flyer for PHI. It screams one season wonder on a stacked OL.

All the same experts that claim the Bears are the #1 destination for Trey Smith and $100 mil contract are instantly going to flip flop and say Poles is stupid for spending so much when there were so many obvious better and cheaper options.

Same thing happens every time the Bears make any move or don't make any move.

Trey Smith is not an All Pro and he's definitely overrated to some degree, especially considering the contract he'll get. But he's solid, young, and has much upside, He's also much much better than any other OG on the market, which is why he'll be overpaid.

No they won't. Fans have been begging for the OL to get better. No one should ***** about sinking money into our trash OL.

The center is the one that generally works directly in tandem with the guard. The Tackle usually is more on an island or getting help from someone chipping the DE.

Humphrey is 1st team all pro and the highest paid center in the NFL for a reason.

So are you saying the Center is more important than the OT?

Also that OT is Lane FUCKING Johnson. You want to give credentials and gloss over those of Johnno's?? OK...

Did some reading on him and all kinds of shit about his lack of effort and getting in shape. We have been down this road before. Hard pass
Was just posting this:

After a solid rookie season in which he started 13 games at left tackle, Becton endured back-to-back seasons that were wiped out due to injury. In the 2021 season opener against the Panthers, Becton suffered a right knee injury and missed the rest of the year following a surgical procedure. During his time away because of injury, Becton’s weight climbed to 400 pounds and the Jets expressed concern.

“I had a feeling I would be in this spot because I deserve to be in this spot,” Becton said after the NFC Championship via NJ.com. “I worked too hard. I knew I wouldn’t stay with the Jets for my whole career.”

Becton had his moments at his natural position, but he was not consistent enough. He committed 12 penalties [second most in the NFL] and allowed 12.5 sacks, according to Next Gen Stats.

The Jets are often a low-hanging punching bag because of their futility, but it is difficult to criticize them for letting Becton walk. He played 30 games in four seasons for the Jets. In addition to his injuries, Becton also appeared to lack motivation and criticized fans on social media.

Lol... I am doing neither, OT is way more valuable than a center. I simply said the center works more with the guard. Lane Johnson can still be all world and not necessarily make a bad RG better than a center who actually can combo block and assist the RG more frequently

I think it is too early to be paying stupid money for existing NFL players. The Bears should try to load up in the draft, see how the new guys look, and then look to the trade deadline to make some moves. Throwing 50 or 60 million a year at a couple of players is smart if they are the difference between a wild card level loss and a trip to the super Bowl. But, the Bears aren't there yet. Let us see how Coach Johnsons program works and go from there.
