Agreed. It's not like Hammer was Bad. I just think his overall game vs Salary was a bit lacking. I just don't think he's one of the most improved 'hawks.
Kopecky looked damned good this year. Crawford looked damned good this year. Leddy Looked damned good this year. Smith looked damned good this year.
Well considering Craw, Leddy, and Smith weren't necessarily on the Hawks last year, I can't really say they are the most improved Hawk. Biggest surprise, I'd probably say Crawford. I knew he was good, but I didn't think he would take the starting role so early, if at all this year. I thought he had starter potential but I definitely think he has progressed into his future faster than expected.
Kopecky definitely improved the most from last year. Perhaps it has something to do with being given the opportunity to do so, but he's definitely stepped up. We missed him big time in the Vancouver series. I'd say his impact would have been just a notch under Bollands IMO. Most fans don't really understand that his game is valuable or take his role for granted. Honestly, if you would have asked me "who will step up more with the absence of Buff and Ladd, Kopecky or Brouwer?" I would have said Brouwer. Didn't work out that way.
From the 4th line to the 2nd line, Kopecky did not miss a beat. Do I think he's a top 6 forward? Not really, but he did OK. He's a 3rd line guy who can occasionally fill into the 2nd line role, but the guy definitely stepped up when no one thought he would. I have to say he is the most improved based on all of this alone. Not even mentioning his point total, which vaulted from 21 points to 42 points, literally doubling his total. You won't find another guy on the Hawks that improved by 100%, not just on the Hawks, but you'll have trouble finding anyone else in the NHL that has done that. It's almost like saying if Fraser would have come back, he would have around 38 points.
For arguments sake, if it's Craw VS Kopecky, I would pick Craw in a heartbeat. He's improved greatly and I never thought he would be ready from the get-go to be thrown into the starter role. I thought maybe he could grapple it from Turco by the end of the season, similar to Niemi VS Huet, but I didn't think he would take it right away. From the AHL to NHL starter, definitely the most improved player through the entire organization. Leddy is probably a very close candidate for 2nd, although I always thought his skill set was high throughout college, I was not surprised to see him make it.
