Who, in your opinion, was the biggest musical influence last year? In the last 5 years? Since the turn of the century? What about in your lifetime? Who has been the biggest musical influence in your life?

Discuss!

For the last year, I'm going with Katy Perry. Last 5... I would have to say the Black Eyed Peas. Since the turn of the century... Kayne West. In my lifetime, I am going with John Mayer. As far my life goes, it's easily Michael Buble.

The last 5 years? Porcupine Tree. Single handedly revitalized progressive rock. Brilliant band.

In my life? Pink Floyd. Was a huge fan by the time I was 9 when The Wall was released. Before that though it was The Beatles. Made me a music lover to begin with and I learned at a very early age that chicks loved singing the Beatles in school. Even the hot ones. And there were hot ones in 3rd grade oh yes there were.

Influences as in influencing their respective genre of music or in a personal regard?

I think the Beatles were huge for music as a whole. Alice in Chains (before Layne died) basically created the Seattle-grunge movement back in the day and Layne constantly sang of his struggles with drugs. Then currently, Jesse Leach (former KsE singer) and Adam D. (current KsE guitarist/background vocals) formed Times of Grace and all of their songs is straight from the gut.

Am I seriously going to have something in common with IronMike? I am almost ashamed.

Porcupine Tree and really anything Steven Wilson touches is fucking brilliant. In Flames and Tool are the greatest bands in my lifetime. This is a Standoff, Much the Same, and Strung Out get mentions for being great punk rock bands.

What kind of guy lists John Mayer, Katy Perry, and the Black Eyed Peas as the best music in their life? I can guess....

Does this mean I have to subscribe to Maxim now?

I've been into Porcupine Tree since In Absentia which, imo, is one of the most brilliant rock albums ever conceived. I was perusing Tower Records for new music, which I did just about every Friday, and the album cover caught my eye and compelled me to buy it. I brought it home and was blown away for the first time since I was a kid. After that I ordered every PT, No Man, Blackfield, Bass Communication and everything else Steven Wilson had anything at all to do with. Aside from David Gilmour, of course, I think he's the best guitarist in music today. I've seen them 6 times in concert and was at both shows in Chicago when they recorded their first live DVD in the second or first row depending on where the cameraman who was standing next to me wanted to be. At another show at the Vic I noticed him in the alley doing a photo shoot and approached him. I was 5 feet away before security made me leave and I could not muster anything to say being so close to musical genius.

I also love Opeth now especially after Wilson produced them for a few years. I liked them before but didn't think they were all that special but since they got away from the death metal and started becoming more progressive, they've gotten pretty brilliant as well.

Opeth is the most talented music group on the planet. Some of their work can bore me but there is no doubt that Mikael Akerfeldt is a music god. I say that because I am not a huge fan of prog rock, I am more of a thrash metal and punk rock fan.

If you're into electronic or drum and bass music check out Pendulum. Steve Wilson and In Flames worked with them on there latest album, shit was insane.

I love new thrash bands that are going back to early Metallica, Megadeth, and Testament roots. Bands like Sylosis and Lazarus AD. Testament is still going hard, their last album was amazing (Formation of the Damnation).

John Mayer is the real deal.

Musical influences is silly because all musicians in different genres will have different answers.

Have you checked out the Big 4 Blu-ray? Fantastic. I love thrash and metal in general but I prefer the melodic stuff. Iron Maiden is the best metal band on the planet. The Final Frontier is a genius album. I'm waiting for the N.A. tour dates for Priest's farewell Epitaph tour to be announced. I want to see that. Rob Halford is a metal God.

I'll have to check out Pendulum.

Ever listen to Death Angel? Love them.

Yea I have Killing Season from Death Angel on my iTunes, shit is amazing.

Not a fan of Maiden or Judas Priest at all. For me it is Exodus, Testament, Megadeth, and Metallica's first four albums.

You listen to any Mastodon? They have really reinvented the modern metal scene of late. Or Children of Bodom, they might be my current favorite band.

If you're into fast technical metal check out Nodes of Ranvier, specifically the album The Years to Come. It is one of the best albums of all time, they have a unique sound.

Killing Season is a great album. I love Mastodon, probably my favorite of the newer bands I've listened to. I don't run into too many fans though.
