Fellas,

I get it. Since this season is shaping up to be downright terrible, you're already thinking about ways we can improve. Whether you're a draft dork or a Madden Maven, the wheels are furiously spinning inside your head as you contemplate the value of a 5th round pick VS a 6th round pick.

I love you. You're a Bears fan and you want this team to win.

But when it comes to dismissing players via trade or having an all-out firesale, there is one Chicago Bear that should be protected from this.

Matt-Forte.jpg

There are certain players that can stand the test of time and endure multiple regime changes. So far, Matt Forte has done that. But how? It isn't because he's cheap or has been underpaid so what is it? It's because he's a PLAYER.

Matt is a force on the field and off it. What Matt does on the practice field, in the locker room and on his own personal time is what sets him apart. He does not get in trouble with the law. Nobody can say anything bad about him and he's been a positive role model and lockerroom leader. Why ship a guy like that away for PEANUTS when you are rebuilding? Is Matt incapable of adapting to a new philosophy or scheme? Of course not!

You cannot underestimate the power of keeping a player like Forte around through this rebuild. Rewarding him with his final contract will speak volumes to the rest of the league. You all know that we have ownership with the stigma that they are cheap and uncaring. Part of it is true, part of it is hyperbole but you cannot deny that EVERYONE knows about all of the bitching that former players do about us. From Olin to BU, Sayers and everyone in between. Having Forte retire a Bear will reap positive benefits. More vets will be willing to sign b/c we take care of our own.

To those that argue that Forte's best years are behind hopefully know that Forte is 2nd in the league in rushing. You've all seen the man-he's ripped. He will no doubt be in incredible shape year after year. His lack of injuries and playing style indicate to me that another three years will not be a problem. He's been playing GREAT this year so far with a shitty offense-once again.

Now, I am not a cap guru. Only at times like these do I miss db54, but according to this website (http://overthecap.com/salary-cap-space/ our Bears will have 57 million to spend next year. Does that include Jared Allen and Jay Cutler being gone? Surely, we can fit the salary of an aging, unproductive RB into that, right?

Demarco Murry is 27 years old and is coming off of almost 1900 yards rushing in 2014. He signed a contract for 18 million total guaranteed money this past offeseason. That is peanuts compared to years past. The NFL as a whole has been devaluing RB's for years now. So what makes any of us think that Matt Forte, who will be 30 years old in December, will command something higher than that? Is 15 million guaranteed too much money? I sure as hell don't think so. Not for a guy that has given us his all every year since we've drafted him and who is only behind Walter Payton in a ton of statistical records.

Matt Forte is a special player and person. What he's done for the city of Chicago through numerous shitty coaches, QB's and offensive line is simply amazing. Casting him aside for PEANUTS is a move only a criminal would make in my humble fucking opinion. Matt Forte should retire a Bear.

I don't think Forte is going to want to stay, and I don't blame him. He deserves a shot at a ring. If he does though and the price is right I see no reason not to resign him. Players like Forte are not a dime a dozen.

Well, I am not trading him because I think he doesn't want to stay. I keep him because he's a valuable commodity both on the field and in the locker room and will not cost as much as so many people are implying.

*Not directed totally at you, of course.

He's going to be 30 and deserves a to play for a contender. That is WHY we listen to offers, to reward him for what he has done here. Not to punish him.

Love Forte, would love to see him back next year (and obviously for the rest of this one), but if the cash is too high or he wants to chase the ring I completely understand that as well.

How much do you all think he's going to cost? Also, please read first. Thanks.

This all depends what he asks for. Under no circumstances do I give him big money over 3+ years. The actuarial data on RB over 30 breaking down is staggering. Those who ignore history are bound to repeat it. That being said, I'd love to keep him. If I'm Dallas, I would trade a 2 for him. He can keep that team afloat until Romo and Dez are back. That three headed monster would be dominant.

Forte does not take big hits. I have never seem him take on a defender head on. He will be able to play longer then the average RB because of that. 30 is not the death toll for him that it is for others. Smart smart RB that should retire a Bear.

The Bears are rebuilding. We are years away before we will be back to being a contender. By that time Forte will be out of the league or a shadow of his former self. What is best for the bears is to trade him now so the rebuilding dosnt take as long, and it also is better for forte because he might have a shot at a ring.

We need to keep young talent and trade old talent away. Think about it like this.. in 3 years the Bears will make a run for the playoffs. who on the team now will help with that in 3 years?

Love Matt Forte.

But you let him go.

For him you let him go so he can not sit through a rebuild and he can go and play for a winning team.

For the team you play your young players, develop them, and reinvest the cap room. Keeping Langford and Carey off the field just stunts their development. The Bears cannot turn to one of them in 2017-18 and they have still proven nothing.

This is really a weak case to make to think he will be able to do what so few other players ever do.

Apart from rare greats like Walter Payton and few others, you don't often see a guy who was a long term full used starter his whole NFL career succeed at RB after their 8th season. It's right around that point when they hit 30 and have been used so much it winds down. Others were in great shape or weren't taking big hitting injuries either. It's not a matter of big hits but over and over getting used. LT or others weren't not in great shape either but the time generally comes to the players.

That's the rub. It might not be a matter of whether the Bears still want Forte, it's more than likely going to be whether he wants to stay here. Hitting the free agency market after this season and knowing that his next contract is going to be his last, it's going to be very tempting to sign with a team who's closer to winning, regardless of who is offering what in terms of $$$.

I agree, he is showing Marcus Allen level of decline. He is always in the top of yards from scrimmage across the NFL. He is always in the top of percent of offense. He came out like gang busters this year and with Cutler back there he could have a big year.

I think we need to keep Cutler AND Forte and I will continue to think that until you show me a superior replacement to either on the roster and proven it.

Fucking crazy idea, I know I'm crazy. rah rah rah

Forte has been the one reliable force on O we have had since he was drafted but if the Bears can get compensation for him, be it through trade or a compensatory pick, they should allow him to go somewhere he can compete for a title.

Forte hasn't shown any signs of decline at this point but it will come sooner than later so investing more money into a position where studs can be found later in the draft doesn't make sense for a rebuilding team.

Should it really continue after this post. If Forte doesn't agree on an acceptable deal or Bears can get some real value off him let him go.

We should trade Forte to the Patriots... ask for a 2nd, accept a 5th...
