All the good stuff is taken so the Cubs are clearance-bin shopping now  Need a few guys to mop up during spring training split squad games.

Honestly if this were to happen it wouldn't bother me none. He had a few average to above average years and is left handed if memory serves. He could be a LRer also for the bullpen. Plus his glasses are EPIC. So I'm kinda hoping he makes teh team out of spring training in the BP.

I wonder what the thought process is into signings like this. Like, did they put this guy on a list of guys they want even though it seems there's hundreds of guys like him. . Or is it more of a hey let's draw names from a hat situation?

It's probably something like this...

1. They need roster filler for spring training.

2. They don't want to spend above a certain amount, which explains why this isn't Roy Oswalt they are signing.

3. They see something from this guy's stats that suggests he'll work for peanuts and a non-guaranteed contract but might have some bounceback that will allow him to be quasi-useful.

If he doesn't pan out, that's less than $100K down the tubes. If he does pan out, they got good production for super cheap. That's just the way it is with these types of signings. Plus at some point, you have to spend a bit of money to get business tax breaks :D
