I believe it was planned to do recon and then possibly deploy Special Forces. But I could be talking out of my ass.

Was not built for deploying of anything.....when orginally drawn up by Lockhhed Martin was a test platform for two things: testing of Stealth/anti radar technology and it was also the original test platform for a "tomahawk" launch bed...a ship that all it carried on it was vertically launched tomahak missiles.....somewhere in the number of 200....with a minimal crew, to eventually be remote controlled. Never got that far...shortly after they drew and built this, they had a couple others being designed and built that were better.

Where is the outrage about throwing money away for dead-end projects like this?

Wasn't a "dead end project" as you call it. The testing done to/with this ship lead to some very important developments.

It's not a very pretty color. It doesn't seem very practical for someone to buy. What would you do with it? And it would probably cost a fortune in gas to operate. I could see some millionaire making a party boat out of it though. Why don't they just give it to some Museum? Is it a one of a kind?

Most of them are classified Bri. A couple of the bigger ones, however, are the further development of the catamaran/hydrofoil hull. As well as it lead to some major advancements in the lessening of radar crosssectioning with the design of the hull...the Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer design is directly linked to this ship. What they dont discuss in that article is this ship was built in the early/mid 80's and had been in service for, I want to say, almost 10-12 years before it made any kind of a "public" appearance....I think it's existance was revealed in 1995 or so.

Yes it is a one of a kind. It is a military vessel, it is not supposed to be a "pretty color." As to donating it, I dont know they dont.

Doesn't the Navy have it's own museum?

Bri, just about every base has a museum of some type on it. I see where you are going with this. It was not anything other then a test platform, it wont go into a Naval museum.

Then that is a shame. It may be the Navy's Edsel, but it was still a part of it's history and should be worthy of preserving.

Bri, then by your definition, everything is part of history/piece of history and should be preserved. It doesnt work that way.
