People seem to be forgetting the Big 10 is a prestigious ACADEMIC conference. highly rated Universities like Northwestern, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio State wouldn't want to accept schools that would hinder the conferences academic prestige.

This is 100% correct. Well, at least it used to be. All 12 schools in the big 10 (including Nebraska) are accredited members of the AAU (Association of American Universities). source This isn't about academics or athletics. It's about money.

However, it's no secret that The Big 10 would love to have Notre Dame and they are not an AAU member. Neither is Kansas State, but both Kansas University and Missouri are.

National Universities Rankings - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report

on here Iowa and Indiana are ranked in the 70s in terms of private and public colleges

while Mizzou is ranked 102

and take a look on there but i dont think there are any big ten schools listed below mizzou

granted these statistics are from 2008 but has enough changed since then to make significantly alter the rankings?

The source you used has Nebraska listed at 96, just one spot above Missouri, and the Big 10 is taking them, so MU wouldn't be much of a stretch. KU is also listed at 96, so if Nebraska is good enough, so is KU.

I agree that Kansas State would not make the cut though.

No but NU probably is a more attractive addition due to it's football history

And Notre Dame for the same reason.
And let's not forget it's National NBC TV contract!

yup i also find it funny how a big reason why osborne wanted to bolt the big 12 is because before texas and them joined the big 8 to make it the big 12...the academic standards were not as high and osborne got recruits who were lets just say not that smart...but with texas academic standards those recruits cant be accepted into nebraska...leaving the big 12 for the big 10 wont do much for that because the big 10 probably has even higher academic standards if im not mistaken. Well i guess he gets the consolation prize which is getting away from texas(osborne just doesnt like ut in general) and getting a 20 mill+ deal with the big ten
