So I'm thinking about getting my first tattoo soon. I have no experience with any of it, the only thing I know is that it's painful and you should be 100% sure you want it before you get it. I was thinking about getting a quote from Dexter either on my upper right arm or my right shoulder blade since it's my all time favorite show.

"How do you want to be remembered? We all leave behind a legacy. A monument to make our mark. But I've never stopped to consider what it is I've created. Will they call it monstrous? Or a masterpiece?"

First thing I was wondering is if I do get it at the top of my arm and have it go down, how far do you think it would come down? Like if I were to wear a T-Shirt, would it totally cover it or would some of it show. I'm 6'3 with a normal wingspan, I know measurement would help but I'm to lazy to get one. Also how long would it take, on average?

It really depends on the size of the text you decide on and how far around your arm you have it wrap. It can cover as much or as little as you decide. They can make text small enough that you'd need a magnifying glass to read it or fucking huge if that's your desire.

One important thing though: triple or quadruple check the spelling of even the most simple word!!! I have full sleeves so far (I'm working on an eventual full suit, but am taking my time) -- I've never gotten text, but have seen enough terrible tattoos to know that you really, really, need to make sure to go to someone who has a long history in the business and to be very sure that what you're getting is what you want.

And the pain issue is really dependent on where you get it; the outside of the arm isn't bad at all, thinner skin like the inside of your arm and areas where bone is close to the skin (elbows, wrists, etc) hurt a lot more than fleshy areas. A line of text shouldn't take that long though, so don't worry. Just don't be an idiot and drink/smoke/take painkillers before hand...they make your muscles twitch when getting gunned and result in terrible line work.

I don't like tats either, but you don't have to insert your concept of taste everywhere. Nobody cares. There's another thread somewhere about tattoos, and if you want to add your .02 to it, go ahead and bump it up and say what you gotta say.

Thanks! I don't drink/smoke or any of that so I'm good in that sense. I wasn't sure how they did text size so that's good to know as I didn't want it that far down my arm(if I do get it) but also want it to be readable.

Virtually everything about what you get is up to you (there are limitations, but not many). Decent artists will either sketch out the font/size text you want on a piece of paper and make a stencil or freehand it on your arm with marker. What you really need to decide is how many lines you want to break the quote into while considering spacing, height, and how far around you want it to wrap. When I put on a dress shirt you'd never know I have tattoos, which was something I considered beforehand (as you seem to). Just don't be shy about telling the tattooist what's what; I've seen several people get things they weren't completely happy with when they shouldn't have just because they didn't want to "be a dick about it" or something similar. They're your employee, if you don't like something make sure you tell them.

I have 11.

My honest opinion to you is, pay close attention to the stencil. That is a very long quote for a tattoo. Make sure you see it on your body first. Also, don't rush.
