I'm coming out with an article tomorrow covering the first week of the season. Here's an excerpt. I think it needs to be said, because I'm sick of the selective criticism so rampant on the airwaves and in print:
I unfortunately re-watched the Milwaukee game last night. Neil Funk, near the end of the game, commended Kirk for his work on Brandon Jennings. At the time Dumb Funk uttered these comments, Jennings had 21 points, on his way to a career high of 25. I had just re-watched a game full of plays where Jennings blew by Mr. Defense at will. Jennings is exactly the kind of quick ballplayer Kirk can’t guard (i.e. T.J. Ford, Travis Diener), yet that fact didn't prevent our idiot announcer from giving viewers a false impression that our Captain was doing a good job.
Hinrich played 32 minutes against the Bucks. He committed 5 fouls, and drew none (0-0 from the line). He was 2-9 from the field, missing several wide open jumpers, with 2 turnovers. He makes just over $115,000 per game, and he stole ever penny that night. The Bulls won in spite of Kirk Hinrich against the Bucks. As a captain and one of the four primary scorers for this team, he deserved to be ripped. He did nothing to deserve a commendation, but that exactly what his #1 fan, Neil Funk, gave him. It’s a common habit for Funk to heap undeserved praise on players who get into a good fundamental defensive stance and do little else.
Salmons has taken a lot of heat so far this season, and rightly so. So has Rose. But Kirk’s 2-15 so far this season from the 3-point line. He’s missed his last 10 3-point attempts. He's shooting 35% on the season (13% from the 3-point line). He’s in the top 3 in minutes played. He’s #1 on the team for FOULS COMMITTED, yet eighth on the team in Free Throw Attempts (6), just behind Taj Gibson’s 9. This is the same kind of start for Kirk that got Skiles fired. I expect Vinny to suffer the same fate sometime this season.
Of course, the Captain’s received a pass for his poor start. Well, he won’t get one from me. He’s had 1 solid game (San Antonio), one average game (Boston), and two embarrassing performances (Heat and Bucks). He needs to it pick up. I call it like I see it. I wish everyone else would start doing the same.
