I have to agree with one of the story commenters.......looks like it is back to RedBox. I only do the streaming video and the selection isn't great for new releases.

No its not at all, thats what i was thinking, was to downgrade to instant play and just hit up redbox. Im assuming, this doesnt mean they are getting new releases quicker or anything, since they didnt say anything about it. Im curious how many people are going to do the same, this may end up hurting their profits more than increasing them.

They still dont have serious competition in the online market other than blockbuster online. Netflix 3 dvd +instant play plan will be 23 bucks. Blockbusters is 19.99 and I dont know if they have instant play or not. Maybe they figure its only a matter of time before they get a real competitor, and they are just trying to capitalize while they can.

I have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to films.

The dilemma is honestly canceling Comcast due to being raped for cable.

I don't use if cause I don't have the attention span to watch a movie anymore, but one of my co-workers was complaining about it today because they use it all the time.

I really dont watch TV. At all. I watch movies. I mean literally I was paying 200 bucks a month (counting internet) to get the movie channels. It just wasnt worth it and I seriously havent noticed its absence except in the wallet.

cable seriously needs to consider modularizing service even more. If I want HBO and Showtime and thats it, I should be able to get that, instead of spending 100 dollars on programming I wont watch at all on top of it.

I agree.

When a company breaks through the corporate garbage and actually offers A la carte services, it will devastate all of the channels on the low end of the dial.

Pipe dreams for us.

we are going to see it via online streaming before we see it strait from cable companies.

its already beginning with things like Hulu and such. The thing that annoys me is I know progress is going to get bogged down in bullshit until it finally drives the nail in the coffin of traditional services. Record companies tried to fight online sales of individual songs for awhile before they finally just accepted it. Times change, no company is helping themselves by fighting it. Look what happened to physical video stores. You still see them on occation. Lucky for companies they can file for bankruptcy of block buster would be a distant memory right now, instead of finally joining the 21st century and taking it online and to remote renting locations ala redbox.

Instead of immediately adapting they tried to fight it. When the customer base finds a better option, you arent helping yourself by fighting against what they want.

I do the streaming as I watch TV series and whatever bs movies I think I'll enjoy.

I wouldn't mind paying say 12 or even 13 bucks a month for new releases and a non-shit selection.

i'm gonna change my account to just get the physical movie rentals. i never stream enough to justify the extra cost. we still find it convieniant to just get the movies through the mail. it usually takes a week to find time to sit and actually watch a movie anyways, so not having the absolute newest releases isn't a big deal.

They are doing this in anticipation of their major license contracts expiring at the end of this year. They are expecting the new contracts are going to be 10x more money for the major networks.

Looks like I'll be switching back to streaming only.

I changed my account last night... I've been on the 3 DVD plan since about 2004. They've been charging me $19.99 and I was barely using the DVD's... while it would only be $3 more, they get a 65% cut from me. I can wait on "new" stuff or if I really want to see it, I'll hit up a Redbox.

Who does the PR for this company? In what board room did someone think this was a good idea? ****, cable companies are pretty greedy sumbitches and even they know you have discount bundled packages.

My cost for Netflix will increase to about $20/month. Thats 2 DVDs at a time plus streaming. I don't appreciate the increase but I still think it is worth it. My kids stream movies daily. I don't mind waiting for the new releases to hit Netflix, the xtra few weeks isn't a big deal to me. If there is something I just have to watch now I'll PPV or Redbox it once in a while.

As far as cable goes I'll be cancelling Showtime again unless they offer it to me free again.

I don't use Netflix cause I don't like the idea of a continuing charge on my credit card each month. Some month I will watch 4 movies, other months I won't watch any. I don't like being on a program like they have which means you have to watch 3 movies a month to get your money's worth. I did however try the 'free trial' a few years ago. If you let the free trial run out and then cancel like I did they will offer you a few more months of free trial. Not sure if they still do that but something to try if you're interested.

The long rang plan for Netflix is to provide streamed movies on the day of DVD\B-Ray release, and eventually movies that are in theater. They have partnered pretty strongly with both Sony and Apple.

Both Sony and Apple want to be major players in the video streaming market and especially at appliance level....then again this have been being worked on for at least 5 years, so I am not holding my breath yet

I am still using Blockbuster by mail. They have new releases available and if demand is high, you may wait a week at most. But I get to have three movies in my posession at any time and keep each individual one for an unlimited amount of time. All for $17.99 a month. I get them in the mail, and put them back in the same sleeve and mail them out. It takes on average two days to get a new one from when I put it into the mail.

Nice system. Unfortunately, I also pay about $250 for my home phone, internet, and cable package (includes all dish network channels, sans foreign programming blocks like spanish and asian).

But now I am finding that I can watch almost all of my shows on the internet through hulu plus and the like. I can also wait a month or so and catch 'newer' movies on cable. So I am left to wonder if I went nuts at the impulse aisle and need to streamline some of my choices. Not to mention I have over 40 movies in my BB queue and may watch five a month. Work, school, vacations, and summer activities leave me little free time. Imagine when we have kids finally!

I will say again though, that Blockbuster by mail is never a loss financially. I always get my 18 bucks worth out of it.

Something for everyone to consider about streaming is the new methods most ISPs are going to use to 'regulate' bandwidth. They may advertise and charge you for 20Mbps but you only get 5-10Mbps in reality. The FCC and other regulatory bodies are looking into this.

ANyone do Hulu Plus or any of the premium services like that? I need, yes need haha, HBO and Showtime, but how good of an alternative to cable are these services? I don't need to watch shows when they premier as long as I can watch them within a reasonable time. I think the major hit of dropping cable/satellite will be no sports and I'm not sure I'm ready for that.

I am doing Hulu Plus through the Blu Ray player. But I have a 6Mbps connection through AT&T DSL. If I had 20Mbps like some fiber services like UVerse and Fios then it may be more advantageous. However, it is not super easy to navigate the Blu Ray interface and a lot of shows are not available.

If you want HBO, I heard that HBO GO online is pretty cool. I haven't checked it out though.
