The last two serious rivals to the already-established MLB, NBA, NFL, or NHL were the American Football League and the World Hockey Association (XFL and UFL excluded), and isn't it odd that one of these leagues have returned int eh form of a new league?

The American Football League has declared itself Major and is starting in the 2011-2012 season with 16 teams in 4 divisions;
Eastern Division: Miami Stingrays, New York Ironmen, Providence Steamrollers (name of a 1920's or 1930's NFL team IIRC), and Washington Admirals.
Central Division: Chicago Bruisers, Columbus Hornets, Milwaukee Machine, and St. Louis Hawks.
Southern Division: Birmingham Yellowhammers, Louisville Tanks, Memphis Blues, New Orleans Specters
Western Division: Dallas Marshals, Los Angeles Rhinos, Oklahoma Marauders, and Utah Mustangs.

The Chicago Bruisers Official Webpage: AFL -Chicago Bruisers

Uniforms aren't bad, but I'm waiting for info.

Additionally, a new Pro Spring Football League has been founded. It is called the Stars Football League, but won't have a Chicago team for it;s inaugural season. The SFL will have 6 teams; Michigan Coyotes, Mobile Gladiators, Fort Lauderdale Barracudas, New Orleans Jazz, Little Rock Ironmen, and Dayton Beach Racers.

What are your thoughts on the Chicago Bruisers and the American Football League, and to a lesser extent, the Stars Football League?

NFL Markets:
Miami Stingrays
New York Ironmen
Washington Admirals
Chicago Bruisers
St. Louis Hawks
New Orleans Specters
Dallas Marshals

UFL Markets:
Los Angeles Rhinos (UFL is committed to LA expansion team for next year too)

Own Markets:
Providence Steamrollers
Columbus Hornets
Milwaukee Machine
Birmingham Yellowhammers
Louisville Tanks
Memphis Blues
Oklahoma Marauders
Utah Mustangs

Wasn't getting enough attention in the All Sports Forum. This is big news, a new Major League team in Chicago!

Don't care. Let it last for a few years without collapsing then maybe i'll have some sort of opinion.

Here's something that might make it interesting though, their tickets are only $25, the Bears are way higher than that. They might be able to draw a crowd because of this. Still no word of venue though.

If they can find somewhere to play in the city rather than the burbs they'll prob do ok revenue wise.

By claiming Major League status, the AFL should have an advantage over the UFL Los Angeles team in LA too, and that is a good market. I can't see them succeeding in NY though, their is too much competition there.

The OP
I am hoping for the UFL's developmental minor league concept to actually have some weight.

Hoping either UFL or AFL can somehow get something growing not to rival the NFL as much but create an actual developing players league via spring or not. The UFL was with talks to Goodell about it at the start of their league but knew it was a long way off. There was hope to get it running by the labor agreement to make it work but I don't think the UFL is big enough.

I just checked out the Website. IronMike will love this!
The AFL will be an affordable competitor using a more traditional form of football in contrast to the NFL’s “Quarterbackball.” We want to open the game back up in a manner more intoned with the game of the 1960s and 1970s.
...
Over the past 35 years the NFL has taken the game of football away from its gridiron roots and created a form of “Quarterbackball.” Their game has become one of quarterback to receiver and the rest of the team goes along with the dance. In our opinion this has hampered and reduced the games quality. We will change all of this with rule changes that will open the line of scrimmage up and free up the running game, tight ends and other long forgotten aspects. We will make the game a bit more gritty and gamey in our return to a more gridiron approach.

Expect to see lots of injuries.

The league is headquartered in Peoria, Il.

Should be interesting.

And I WANT the AFL and UFL (and the AAFL and USFL) to all rival the NFL to an extent. It could result in NFL Expansion.

That does sound appealing but still it's just another Arena league type BS for drunken has beens to own like Jim McMahon.

If it's around in 5 years I might start paying attention.

What I really want is to get a new NFL franchise in Chicago to compete with the Bears.

I'm sure that at least plays some part in the Cubs/White Sox building better teams.

Bring the Cardinals back.

It isn't Arena though, it is outdoor. They want to be like the old AFL.

OK, I like that there is a cheap, new team in Chicago though. Should be interesting.

It would be something fun to take the kids to see I agree but I doubt I could get into it much. I take my kids to see minor league baseball here because it's cheap and entertaining. It's a nice way to spend an afternoon but that's about it. Professional women's softball in Schaumburg is fun too. Nice little ball park. Going to see the Cubs and Sox is still affordable. Haven't been to a Blackhawks game in 20 years so I have no idea how much they cost. Haven't been to a Bulls game since Jordan left either.

I'm pretty sure it's just the Bears that charge astronomical prices. I wish they never would have remodeled Soldier Field. I didn't understand what was wrong with it.

I think this league can survive if they play their cards right.
My problem is that they started with 16 expansion teams. That's a LOT.

Totally agree, they can play at the Cell

Home sweet home. They played at Normal Field, Comiskey and Soldier Field but spent most of the time in Comiskey from 1922-1925 and 1929-1958.

Chicago can easily support two football teams.

If this league is new they really aren't expansion teams are they?
