I disabled search to speed up the site on gameday. The way they have vB written, it uses constant queries and that's how the New Posts button works.
But there is the Activity section.

I'll turn search back on soon, but the activity tab is useful when we need to cut features for more performance.

Anyways, like I said, I just do it on gamedays to recoup performance. Tapatalk really needs to use the activity feature on their app instead of the way they do it now.

I can only speak for myself, but hitting 'new posts' is infinitely better than going through the forums. Again, only speaking for myself, but that button being disabled on Game Days hurts my experience using this site.

It's not a design decision on my part, it's a performance decision. Maybe on Tapatalk's end it is a design decision? I hope they switch to the activity feature, which is around 90% the same thing and has next to no performance hit.
With the search indexer on(which is what the new posts button uses), pageloads are at 5-12s on gamedays. With it off, 1.8-6s. Sorry if it's an annoyance, but for now when we need to recoup performance or mitigate attacks, the indexer is going to be disabled.
