Competition committee meeting today:

Head shots, as was previously discussed and after Cooke/Savard hit (still has to pass the PA and BOG - which I assume will by the start of next season) will be further outlawed it seems

Heritage Classic returns, as expected (outdoor game in Canada)

Goalie equipment - form fitting eq will be tested out in juniors (may affect NHL down the pipeline)

I'm not 100% on this as I was never a goalie, but:

Helmets used to be form fitting (think of the old goalie masks, while you have better vision from them, they aren't as protective to the face as the masks they wear nowadays).

Leg pads - Leg pads have a maximum size limit (38 inches, I believe) right now in the NHL. So, Rinne, who is listed at 6' 5" and Chris Osgood, who is listed at 5' 10" can wear the same sized leg pads. This is advantage Osgood if he can adapt to the loss of mobility (if there is one, I should say, and whatever it might be) due to the large pads since the pads will make himself bigger than he actually is.

Does this kinda make some sense?

Yeah makes sense w/ the leg pads. But they are seriously considering bringing back the vintage solid masks with eye holes? Or the Osgood-style masks?

I'm sorry; I don't think they're talking about reverting helmets.

I used this an example because I think it creates the best visual picture as to what form-fitting eq is.

form fitting would be a good idea.

so they would only be able to wear pads retroactive to their size?

In a way, yes. I think comparable (instead of retroactive) to their size would be a more appropriate word choice.

Again, this is only a possible change for the juniors, as they want to assess the affects there before implementing it in the NHL (it also might be a bit of a nightmare to implement).

I don't like the idea behind these potential rule changes.

The hits to the head were already addressed this season when they disallowed blind sided hits to the head, part of playing hockey is to keep your head up and if someone wants to skate through the neutral zone with there head down then they pay the price with a forearm to the face. It's part of hockey and the player is not defenseless if they are hit head on.

I also do not like the idea of changing goalie equipment to increase the scoring, they have also discussed increasing the size of the net. After the lockout we got the new high scoring NHL that was needed and it is great now. It seems like the wants NHL scores to reflect Arena League Football scores.

I noticed I never did toss out an opinion.

Agreed with Severz on the head hits. Keep your head up and outlaw the blindside/defenseless head hits, as was done. It's a physical game; let's keep it that way.

I don't really care about the goalie equipment until I can make assessments seeing how it works out in juniors. It may not have an affect on scoring.

I don't mind the NHL trying to protect the players but you have to keep the game physical and not do what the NFL has done (make the defense play flag football with the quarterback).

One very easy way to get rid of a lot of cheap hits and also keep the physical nature of the game alive is to get rid of the instigator rule.

Aye. Instigator rule needs to go.

The trapezoid can go as well; or maybe reverse it (allow goalies to play the puck on the outside but not play the puck behind his net).

Blindside head shots officially passed today by the BOG. If refs agree, it will result in a 5 minute major and an ejection.

Saw this at NHL.com:

10:00 a.m. – Noon
* Hybrid icing rule;
* No line change for team committing an offside;
* Crease reset rule;
* Face-off variation (face-off controlled by whistle in place of traditional puck drop);
* Overtime: three minutes of 4-on-4; three minutes of 3-on-3; three minutes of 2-on- 2 followed by shootout (5 players per team).

2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
* Bigger crease;
* Verification goal line (additional line situated behind the goal line);
* Wider blue lines;
* Line changes zone in front of each bench;
* Face-off variations (infringement results in the offending player moving back further, three face-off dots down the middle of the ice);
* No icing the puck while shorthanded;
* OT – three minutes of 4-on-4; three minutes of 3-on-3; three minutes of 2-on-2 with long line changes; followed by three shooters per team shootout (if tied after three shots then players who have shot previously can shoot again).

Thursday August 19 (all times ET; subject to change)

9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
* No touch icing;
* Team that commits an offside infraction cannot make a line change and face-off is in offending team zone;
* Face-off variation: after a face-off violation, opposition center may choose his face-off opponent;
* Second referee located off the playing surface;
* Delayed penalty rule
* No icing the puck while shorthanded;
* OT – 4-on-4 (with long line change) followed by a shootout with five players.

1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
* Variations of special teams play;
* OT – 4-on-4 (with long line change).

Some really interesting possibilities. Some sound awesome while some are absolutely brutal.
