The news has been broken but not many seem to know. Antti Niemi and the Hawks are parting ways. Expect Marty Turco to sign a 1 year $1.5 Million deal with the Hawks. Marty will most likely not be the starter for the team, it will be the familiar face Corey Crawford.
Last year Crawford had HIGHER ratings than Niemi did in camp but did not make the team because of contract issues. Expect him to play as well as Niemi come play-off time.
You all probably have the same question: Where is the Frenchman?
Well my friends Cristobal Huet will be sent down to play in the minors and he will ask to go to Europe. The Hawks will OK it and he will no longer be on the cap or owned by the Hawks. The Euro club will pay $2 Million of the contract and all problems will be solved.

All of this comes from my source in the scouting branch of the organization.

Well no Stanley cup for the next few years. They ruined a good thing. Them and the NHL.

They still got 48 hours. So they could still keep him or put him in UFA and sign him long term. But who knows. I dont trust crawford or turco, lol.

Then you havent watched hockey much.

Turco put up almost identical numbers to Niemi last year playing behind a much worse defense than Niemi.

Niemi is good, but not god-like

Hey i'm optimistic about Crawford

Thats why letting Niemi go and take the turco deal makes sense.

Gives crawford one more year to get some seasoning, then make him the #1 next year

I agree... Turco will most likely sign 1.5 to come to Chicago. But to sit on the bench? No. Turco will start, that is why he will take a cut to go to a team that wants to continue their winning ways. Crawford had numbers possibly, but the man is not ready for the starting job at the NHL level.

Turco, if not Niemi, will be the starting netminder... regardless of what the source says.

I think the key with the Niemi situation is as much the one year contract as the cap hit.

On a roster already squeezed by the cap that includes the bonuses for the upcoming season as part of the hit, there is no reason to try to squeeze that much in under the cap for the performance level. Not that I think Niemi is a bad goaltender - I just don't think he is the second coming of Ken Dryden is all. And as such, as a business - you have to go with someone willing to take the lesser amount - even moreso when the statistics indicate comparable performance.

Now while I am not predicting a Stanley Cup next season (I never have before), I do think it is worth noting that this current season's team won with a starting goalie earning under a million dollars. I don't necessarily know that the highly paid stud goalies are a necessity to any playoff run; leastwise they have shown that to be the case in the last few seasons.

Agree. While I think Niemi might be a tad better at stopping shots (certainly breakaways where he excels), Turco will add a lot to the Hawks transition game if he comes here. He is almost the perfect fit for this speedy Hawks team.

That being said, everything the OP posted is already out on the net somewhere in one shape or another.

This is what they source relayed to me and it all makes sense so I put it up. If I had it my way I would keep niemi.

Yea i agree we will lose with niemi's shootout expertise, but thats about it.

Turco's puck moving will make campbell, keith and hammer that much more dangerous.

And thats fine if it's your opinion. just as long as you dont see niemi as irreplaceable.

Wait....wait....wait....wait...

So we are going to let Niemi walk...sign Turco for 1.5mil, and then bench him for a goalie who makes less and hasnt proven a damn thing? Where does that make sense?

We release Niemi to sign Turco... as a starter! What the hell... We might as well save more and go with Crawford and Toivonen if anyone think Crawford would start.
