Yea Niemi is such a greedy prick, I mean he is in the prime of his career and his value is as high as it will ever be and he wants to secure his future for himself and his family... I mean a guy that has been in the NHL for so many years and make as much money as he has should look to take a pay cut and a short term deal and risk injury or a down year.

You guys talk like you would not do the same thing in his situation, I mean the guy was driving a zamboni a few years ago for a living. Also the decision on his value was made by a neutral arbitrator not Niemi or his agent.

You make it sound as though he's some veteran goalie that's entitled to a bajillion dollar a year contract. His NHL debut was two years ago, and even then he only was between the pipes for three games. And this past year, he was the backup until Huet could let beach balls past him, about half way through the year. So, for all intensive purposes, he hasn't been a starting goalie for an entire season. I just don't think it's fair to say that Niemi, who has only been with the team for less than two years, and active for less than a quarter of that, should file for arbitration. It honestly does seem a little greedy.

Do I think Niemi deserved more money? Sure, I do. If it were up to me, I'd pay him the 3 million, or whatever it was, and keep him around. It would be completely unfair not to, after standing on his head in the playoffs. But unfortunately, the salary cap bit us in the ass and in order to keep Niemi, we're have to drop more players to make for cap space.

Would I have done the same thing? Probably. I'd go where the fat pay check is, and that's a sad reality, frankly.

But the bottom line is that he came through for the Hawks, and we're all happy and thankful for it. It just sucks to see him go.

The only real thing left to determine for Antii is his real market value. I would be a little surprised if he were signed for his award amount of what was it? 2.75 million for next year.

My prediction and editorial:
In the event that does happen, then one should really question what planet the arbitrator was from -since at that point the market will have determined his value to have been differently, possibly significantly differently, than the award -and how fair is that to the team that got taken to arbitration -if the arbitrator cannot come up with something close to reasonable market value for this guy's contract.

As for Mr Niemi, he chose his course, I don't blame him - but if he is on the record saying that he is disappointed to no longer be a Hawk- then he really has no one to blame but himself and his agent. I'm sure the team would have worked something out, but he insisted on playing hardball -and right now ... he doesn't have a contract -and goalies are not really in that big of a demand at the moment -- at least Huet is going to be getting paid this season --- so how fair is that?

I am not arguing his worth at all, in fact I don't think he is worth more than 1.75 per season given he has been a steady goaltender in the NHL for 1/2th a season...

My point is that if I was Nemo and I was 27 years old coming off a Stanley Cup win I would find the most money possible. He has not financially secured his future yet at this point in his career and like you said he is not some proven veteran and he could have a huge drop off next season. He also could get hurt. So knowing all that and know Niemi's value is as high as it will ever get (and by a lot) I would look for the biggest longest contract I could find.

I am not saying he deserves a huge long term deal I am saying if I were in his shoes I would do the same thing.

i hope he signs with an average middle of the pack team. he will be exposed for what he really is, an average goalie who was surrounded by an amazing amount of talent on the road to the cup. period.

You cant blame him for wanting his money.....he is coming off a stanley cup winning season, and as Livewire said, he is not really financially secured for the future...let him get his money, it's just unfortunate that we couldnt give it to him

No, I see exactly what you're saying. On Niemi's mental checklist, he's got "Get Cup" crossed off and no he's working on "Get Paid". You just sounded really ridiculous in your first post, but I guess I'm the only one who took it that way. Apologies.

The part in green text in my first post = sarcasm. I don't know how I sounded ridiculous?

Many of the bizarro factors about this whole situation is above.

SC, you're right about his real market value. Although I cannot really knock the arbiter as he/she (I thought it was a she) had to come up with a value in a sorta vacuum world (without any precedent/history to help) with a time limit of 48 hours after the hearing. So, essentially, he/she had to pull a number out of his/her ass. :dunno:

It's hard to say whether or not he received good or bad advice....yet.
