Game Informer broke news today that they confirmed with several sources that Nintendo will be announcing a new console in June and that it'll be out in 2012. But here's a link to Kotaku's article where they say:
"Furthermore, we've heard that the machine will be more powerful than current-gen systems, meaning Nintendo, currently backing a Wii that is weaker in horsepower than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, will be showing a new console that is more powerful than those current competitors."

If that quote is true, good for Nintendo. It's about time they attempt to reclaim the throne of the video game industry. No more gimmicks like the Wii, and hopefully they fight to get more AAA titles on their console.

Oh shit. I'm all for a Nintendo comeback(to my definition, at least). Give me something completely different than the Wii and I will be stoked.

I'll probably sell my current Wii and get this.

Wii 2 Announcement During E3? - Evil Avatar

Very good chance it's the Wii 2.

And it makes sense. Nintendo already has a strangle-hold on international gaming with the Wii and DS. If it's the Wii 2, I would expect the same type of games, with the same type of genres, geared towards families and kids. They OWN that market and it would be foolish to abandon that to compete with the PS3/360.

If it is something else, I would be shocked. If it's the Wii 2... well, better graphics, I guess :)

CVG has quite a bit of info on it.
  • Entirely new controller. Not an upgraded WiiMote.
  • Built in HD screen on the controller.
  • Backwards compatible with Wii games.
  • Full HD visuals and graphical capabilities beyond the 360 and PS3.
  • Third party developers working on lineup of launch titles.

I dunno if it's reclaiming much of anything. Wii was #1 for a while, and cost far less to make, so they made out like bandits LOL. The drop to #3 was natural, but the revolution project was never a bad idea. Not for a second. Hell, I bet they still made more profit on the Wii than Sony did off the PS3.

Make no mistake, Nintendo isn't interested in competing with MS and Sony for the best console. They are releasing a solution to force people to buy new hardware, because the current Wii has been "homebrew hacked" *raises hand 'guilty' * to the point where barely any games can't be easily pirated.
If they could, they would sit on the Wii until MS and Sony had their next gen, just so they could one-up(pun) them on the same release window.

In this article about when the Xbox 720 will be coming, The Examiner tells of a few more rumors about this "Wii 2" that sources have told them
  • Graphics run at 1080p
  • Runs on Blu-Ray
They also say
"If true, then this is obviously not just a "Wii HD" but could be the first in a whole new generation of consoles."

New CVG article has information on the tech specs and controller info.
  • Codenamed "Project Cafe"
  • Controller featuring built in high-resolution screen
  • Similar architecture to the Xbox 360, but more powerful
  • Custom IBM PowerPC CPU with three cores
  • GPU from the ATI R700 family with a shader unit at version 4.1
  • 512Mb RAM
  • Will also include backwards compatibility with both the Wii (including all peripherals) and GameCube games
  • The controller has a six-inch touch screen, a front-facing camera, D-Pad, two bumpers, two triggers and "possibly more," and can allegedly be used as a Wii sensor bar.
  • Late 2012 is the release date, and another "big surprise" about the console is set to be revealed at E3

512Mb seems awfully weak for a next generation console.

It sounds awesome. I still find it ironic that $7 of every Wii2 console made, will go to Sony, purely on BR royalty!

Crys, you're more technologically savvy than me, what do you think of the rumored CPU and GPU?

To explain processing power is hard because you have to make assumptions on the softwares that are driving the unit. R700 is top of the line for power/performance and it does a great job of handling various memory access clusters in a small amount of space. 512mb is more than enough memory, because of how fast it will go in and out at the desired need for the games themselves.

The real concern is the use of 3core IBM power chips. This is a budget move. Power chips and Cell processors act very different, and thats why Sony has a huge advantage if they continue to follow that path for PS4. But cell architectures work so differently from a programming and development standpoint, we haven't even seen software on the PS3 that can take full advantage of its capabilities.

So in short, this is a system that was designed to be A. Affordable. B. Simple. C. Easy to Develop for.

I would say that the PS3 will oddly be able to stay on par with the Wii 2, if businesses continue to develop native games for it. But the Wii 2 will be MUCH more simple as far as development, that the overall experience will seem better.

Sounds like Wii to mii! Which is a good thing, sell what works! Especially in an era where people have had TOO many hardware problems with the 360 and PS3, Nintendo's plan is exactly what most consumers will be interested in buying.

Also, the IBM Power line allows Nintendo to release many levels of the Wii 2. Because it's an easy SMP design, Nintendo can release a 4 core or 6 core model that consumes less power in the future, when costs make sence to make the change. This is great for both Nintendo and IBM, because IBM can phase out production of a CPU, and Nintendo can easily use another one as a replacement. The same is not as true for the R700, but AMD/ATi use a different roadmap for development. This is where AMD renames the R700 to something different for entirely different applications. We already know that AMD/ATi designed R700 to be their future chip for mobile devices with a lot of different codenames, so the chips will be made for a decade in some form, making Nintendo's job ridiculously easy.

In the end, unlike Wii now, the Wii 2 games will be easier to port to future handheld devices. The current Wii and gamecube classics, like Mario Galaxy, Sunshine ect, will require emulation on ARM powered gameboy-whatevers.

That's what I think, sorry for the long reply, but thats tech for you.

New IGN article:

  • somewhere between $350-$400
  • earliest possible release is mid-October 2011
  • could push it back to early 2012 to give game developers time to make games
  • manufacturing taking place in Taiwan, earthquake/tsunami won't have an impact
  • The system will support 1080p output with the potential for stereoscopic 3D
  • In terms of the design of the console itself, the overall size will be comparable to that of the original Xbox 360 and the system is likely to resemble a modernized version of the Super Nintendo
  • It will indeed utilize controllers with integrated touchscreens and be capable of streaming games to each controller
  • Nintendo is considering naming the console Stream, though it is potentially one of several names currently being vetted by the company.

Well, I thought for sure that leaked picture was going to end up fake, but there's another leaked picture out now...and the console looks just like the one above, but black instead of white. Now I'm not sure. Could be the dev kit instead of the actual final product.
