I'm getting an Oculus Rift for non-game development, free to me. This thing looked really tempting, but now I'll actually have one, so I may as well play with it.

Just wondering if anyone has one, or is getting one?

Had not heard of it before you posted.... very interesting....

One thing I have never gotten about VR stuff like this is how movement can work naturally in a game?

If you make a game where you are stationary for the most part (which really limits you) then I can see it working, but otherwise you are moving in the VR but you know you are not moving IRL..... not saying it cannot be done and I know you have the same conundrum with current FPS games to a certain degree, however it just seems to me that VR gear like this would just feel like a monitor stuck to my face with a headset on.

Apparently the Rift is very different from all prior stereoscopic 3D or "VR" stuff. I wouldn't know, but the testimonial evidence is overwhelming. People put their old Grandmas in them, just to get lulz.

Anyways, I'm getting one to develop synchronous servo motors/cameras for heavy lift/machine certification classes. So the application is beyond just video games.

Someone's apparently making a treadmill-like device that hooks up with the Oculus Rift so that you can run and jump in a game. Check out the Youtube video in the link:

Wow, that Omni looks pretty cool. But after watching a few other videos, I think we're still a bit away from having a VR platform that works as intended.
