Vikings have no quarterback

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Let us quickly summarize where the Minnesota Vikings stand with three long, and potentially torturous, weeks remaining in their season.

They literally have no healthy quarterbacks.

They have no idea where they are playing their next home game, scheduled for six days from now. We'll call it "Location TBA Stadium."

Any other questions?

OK, let's expand.

First, interim coach Leslie Frazier said Tuesday that presumptive starter Tarvaris Jackson has a turf toe injury that will "put his availability in jeopardy" for Monday night's game against the Chicago Bears at Location TBA Stadium. Jackson's long history of minor injuries and long recovery periods suggests he won't be ready for this game.

Surprisingly, Frazier suggested that Brett Favre -- who seemed headed into retirement as recently as Monday night -- could be de-mothballed and potentially rolled out as the Vikings' starter. Favre said Monday night that he wouldn't consider playing until the numbness in his right hand subsides, but Frazier suggested that process has begun and said an ultrasound performed Tuesday was "negative" for nerve damage.

"We're hoping to get him back," Frazier said.

For now, we'll file that under the category of a snowball's chance of flying deep below the earth's surface.

I asked Frazier what information he had that would suggest Favre will be ready to take the Location TBA field for this game. His response: "The fact that the ultrasound came back negative helps you be somewhat optimistic. There's no nerve damage, so you feel positive in that regard. Now it's just a matter of the time frame, how long will it take for the numbness to go away. Brett, he's an unusual healer. He comes back a lot sooner than others from most injuries. We'll just have to wait and see."

In the meantime, however, that brings us to rookie Joe Webb, whom Frazier called the "healthiest" of his quarterbacks and one who might well end up taking the first-team repetitions when practice resumes Thursday. (Webb himself was questionable last week because of a hamstring injury.) The Vikings were in the process of moving Webb to receiver as recently as two weeks ago, however, and Frazier acknowledged that trotting him out for the first play at Location TBA "wouldn't be the ideal situation."

For that reason, the Vikings had compiled a list of available veteran quarterbacks, including veteran Patrick Ramsey, and were preparing to sign one of them within the next day or so. (Frazier said former Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper was not one of them.) When asked if he was looking for a veteran who could start Monday, or one to back up Webb, Frazier said it "probably depends on that guy's awareness of what we do."

So when they gather Monday night at Location TBA, it seems the Vikings' most likely starter is Webb. Their second option likely isn't on the roster as of this posting. The Vikings' hopes for Favre rest solely on that -- hope -- and not based on significant physical progress in the past 24 hours.

And when might Location TBA be revealed? As of Tuesday evening, the Vikings would say only that they are getting TCF Bank Stadium ready to host the game if emergency construction crews aren't able to repair the Metrodome's collapsed and torn roof in time.

How long they will wait before making a decision is unknown. If they shift the venue, one of the many issues that would have to be resolved is ticket conversion and how they would pare down distribution by about 12,000. My guess is they will find 12,000 volunteers to not sit outside on what is forecast to be a night of single-digit temperatures, but we'll find out soon enough.

Or will we??????????

Story is old, but basically talks about Vikings QB situation.

One can only hope Da Bears get back on track. The Eagles game showed the potential we have as a Team. The Patriots game showed what seems to happen year in and year out. Tho the Pats are an elite team, so cant complain to much I suppose... Either way, I admit I was leaning on voting for Farves arm to fall off or no QBs for the Vikings seeing our D outta be pissed off now. :)

This game will tell us all we need to know about this team. If they win this game, they'll win the division because no way in hell the Pack win. If they arent ready to go to beat a inferior team, then this team isn't worthy of the playoffs. This is a game that defines what youre made of.

Well what is it Lovie? Show us something.

Just looking on paper, there's no reason for us to lose this game...none at all...hell, we don't even have the dome to worry about. Favre's career is over....Jackson sucks, and is hurt...the back up to HIM sucks, and is hurt...Stop Peterson, win the game, rest the last two weeks....gotta do work, boys...GOTTA do work.

There is reason the Bears can loose, if the Vikings front 7 show up and play to their top potential... with just any advantage by the offense the Bears should win.

It would be hysterical if the QB ends up being Joe Webb. Bears win the division by beating another 3rd string QB? ESPN will instantly call them the worst playoff team ever, which is what they all said about Arizona two years ago after they were blown out by the Patriots in a snowstorm game.

John Clayton of ESPN is reporting that there's a 50/50 chance the game is played in Indy instead of Minneapolis.

Bears have to be ready for this one. It's a division game so throw out the records. I want to see Cutler show his smarts, and I want to see the D bounce back.

That would benefit the Bears far more than the Vikings, imo.

TCF BankWatch: Player complaints rising
If you're a Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears player, here is what you know:

* The field you're scheduled to play on in four days is still frozen solid and covered in a sheet of ice. Temperatures aren't projected to exceed 20 degrees before next week.
* There are no permanent heating coils installed underneath the field, a standard feature in NFL outdoor stadiums located in northern climates.
* A University of Minnesota official has outlined a vague plan to apply an unnamed chemical to melt the ice.
* Then, portable coils would be placed above the field -- don't forget, heat rises -- and covered with a tarp.

Would you feel comfortable about that plan to provide an NFL-caliber playing surface?

I'm guessing many players will not, and already a few of them are raising their cyber-voices. Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Bears safety Chris Harris, among others, have again taken to Twitter on Thursday morning to voice their concerns.

Harris posted this message on his Twitter page and addressed a similar tweet to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell: "Players have concerns of traction n the impact of falling on surface that could be as hard as asphalt. What if ur head hits it?"

Kluwe usually employs humor on his Twitter page, but he sounded pretty serious Thursday morning: "Early reports are a 2' layer of ice underneath the snow on the field at TCF. With no heating coils, expect a hockey game, not football."

With both teams resuming practice Thursday after two days off, I expect to hear more of the same in the coming hours. I would be shocked if the NFL Players Association doesn't chime in soon.

The plan to soften the field could work, but the best you can say at this point is that it's untested. If it fails, players will be subjected to a working condition that is no longer necessary in the modern-day NFL.

It's true that NFL games were once played on frozen turf, but we should all consider the advent of heating coils as progress rather than lamentable. Thawed fields are safer and, just as important, provide a better venue for well-played football. Watching players skate around on ice Monday night doesn't sound like an entertaining evening to me.

For that reason alone, we all have to be prepared for a last-minute shift in locations. Atlanta's Georgia Dome, Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium and St. Louis' Edward Jones Dome are all candidates. Stay tuned.
