Good draft... but I'm hoping next year's will be better because we hopefully will have a higher pick.

I think this was the best draft the Cubs may have ever had. I like the approach, and it's obvious Wilken does too. As long as the front office is open to dish out the cash to sign the picks... we should always be able to pick up top-notch talent and potential like this. Not only does it make it possible to sign the difficult picks... but it also lets the new draftees know they are dealing with a team that won't create issues by low-balling them. It makes future negotiations run smoother.

Of course, a higher pick than #9 would come in handy. Right now, the team's 54-70 record puts them 5th... but Minnesota has as many wins with two less losses... and SD has just 1 more win... Oakland has 1 more win and 2 less losses. So, they could fall to 8th in the next day or so... plus Pitt and Was are falling quickly. Colorado is also lingering out there at 58-67. there's a very good chance this team's miserable season could end up with a lower pick than what we had in June.

The correlation between spending on amateurs and having a good farm system is pretty direct, much more so than major league payroll and winning.
