Efficiency in the NBA is more than scoring. I want my NBA players to play some defense and Gordon doesn’t do that very well. He is what he is ... Instant offense and no defense.

Guys, please e-mail Steve. Let's set this mo-fo straight!

I have to agree with Fred on this, BG does not get nearly enough credit for his defense. Some people need to learn that he has improved from his 4 fouls per game, dribble the ball off his foot, and no defense rookie season. This Ben Gordon that we know and love can play a bit of defense, not outstanding defense, but decent defense. He does not get enough credit for that. THis Steve guy is an idiot.

You have good points, but "efficientcy" is more than offense. I'm talking
about as a complete player and Ben Gordon is far from a complete player.
Heck, John Salmons is more of a complete player than Gordon. I was only
using Hinrich as an example. I could have used Salmons too. I just think the
Bulls will be better off next season without Gordon.

Which I responded to with

Yes, scoring is not all there is to basketball, but it's obviously the most important part. The problem with the defense is not Ben Gordon, and we know that, because the Bulls were the best defensive team in the league with Gordon as a much worse defender than he is now, and they were the second best defensive team in the league with Gordon's defense at about where Derrick Rose is right now on the defensive end. The problem with the defense is our weak interior defense, and not our perimeter defense (although we could stand to improve our perimeter defense, particularly Derrick Rose).

There is only so much a perimeter defender can do. All you can really ask of him is try to stay between his man and the basket to prevent the drive, and contest shots, two things which Gordon does. Interior defense is much more important, because the interior defenders can affect the entire team's offense, while perimeter defenders aren't really in a position to affect more than their own man. And even when a player plays tough perimeter defense, the great perimeter scorers often still score.

As far as efficiency goes, I don't think there really is an argument for Kirk Hinrich, or John Salmons.

In PER (Player Efficiency Rating) Ben Gordon leads with 17.0, then John Salmons with 16.0, and Kirk Hinrich with 13.9.

In the stat called Efficiency: Ben Gordon: +18.20, John Salmons: +13.20, Kirk Hinrich: +12.80. This obviously isn't fair, as this stat doesn't take into account minutes. But if you look into the Efficiency per 40, you get Ben Gordon at 18.5, John Salmons at 17.7, and Kirk Hinrich at 16.9. Derrick Rose is the only one to match Gordon in this stat...and that is having the same, at 18.5.

Gordon leads the team in win shares as well.

I don't think there is really a case to be made that Salmons/Hinrich are better or more efficient.

Does anyone remember Gordon's block of Eddie House's 3-point attempt in Game 5? Quarter 4. One leg. Awesome Defense.

Now I know Collins was getting on him for not helping more, but I blame that on the coaches. Maybe the coach was telling him to stay home. I remember being told that once when a teammate was getting torched for 40. People were yelling at me to double, but coach said stay put.

I'm just saying, Collins said that Gordon should leave his man to double. If we weren't doubling Pierce after he scored 5 straight hoops at the end, something told me Vinny told his guys to stay home.

This statement proves that he knows NOTHING about basketball. Ben is our go to guy in clutch situations. You lose that and you will quickly find yourself losing a lot of games down the stretch. Lose BG and all you can do is pray that Rose develops that killer instinct that Ben has in clutch situations.

And even if that happens, we will be putting Rose in the position Ben was in the past few years, which is one man against the world. And Rose will fare a lot worse in that role than Ben, as he doesn't quite have Ben's jumpshot, and knack for hitting the impossible.

Thus why signing Ben Gordon should be top on Pax's priority list. The only thing I would put above that is getting Bosh/Amare, but since that's very...difficult to accomplish I would put Ben first.

I win apparently?

I must admit ... I consider myself an NBA guy, not just a basketball fan,
and you're producing some good stats. I might use these on my blog in the
near future. I still stand by my opinion, but your facts are pretty darn
good. We, as columnists, don't always have the time to dwell that deep,
contrary to popular opinion that we have all the time in the world.

Great work, Po3.

You have exposed this hack as the king DB he really is. I love how he says "We, as columnists, don't always have the time to dwell that deep" which is him basically saying, "I did a 1st grade job of research and decided to base an entire column off it, but now I'm eating my shirt because I suck at my job."

Drones like this are seriously why newspapers suck nowadays. No "columnists", the guy writes a blog I'd hardly call that a "columnist" anyway, seem to care about researching the facts or even following the game. It's all about site hits and thats it. And hey, being a know-it-all, fact-twisting ****** apparently gets site hits.

I love it Mark!

DB's like this guy fail to realize that BG attempted only 16shots per game this year, and hit 7per. That's 3rd lowest of the top 20 scorers in the league, of which BG was #17 this year.

Sorry Mark but Fred takes the MLK role in the Gordon case. Your more of the Jesse Jackson. Yeah I said it.
