Note: every version of Van Halen sucks. The Gary Cherone just happened to be the absolute worst.

BTW, how can Ommy be some great musical mind, but he's not putting "Take Me to the River," done by the Talking Heads, or "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," by Marvin Gaye as 1a and 1b??

Excellent point, may I add John Fogerty's Proud Mary preformed by Ike and Tina Turner as 1c.

Sammy Hagar by far the best and most talented of the VH lead singers. And I do not appreciate VH.

I would nominate The Band’s version of Marvin ***’s Don’t Do It from the greatest rock & roll movie, The Last Waltz.

Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Superstition by S. Wonder. Obviously, Jimi Hendrix covering Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower should be considered.

Clapton did a great version of Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright, too.

Holy crap we finally have something in common. The Band has been one of my favorites since the early 70s and Clapton's Don't Think Twice is a jaw dropping performance. Maybe you arent such an idiot

Huge fan of the Band. Unfortunately I didn’t “discover” them until I was a about 20. Though that was 30+ years ago. Missed some good music in my youth. Clapton got me into guitar playing, which actually turned out to be an expensive hobby. We share some likes and dislikes in music. Which is always possible. Even for idiots. Which, incidentally, was the nick-name of the group I hung out with in college. If the shoe fits....

A band called 801 did a remake of the Beatles (Lennon) song Tomorrow Never Knows. The Beatles version is terrific and was ground breaking at the time. I do enjoy the 801 cover for many reasons, not the least of which is the opening Bass track by Bill MacCormick an under appreciated musician.

Also listen to the original and keep in mind it was released in 1966, light years ahead of everyone else.

Another one comes to mind, one of the best songs I've ever heard live in person was Niel Young and Crazy Horse doing Cortez The Killer, very special. Grace Potter with Joe Satriani and others did a cover that is great. When I hear someone is covering a song I love it just pisses me off. In the case of both TNK and Cortez so glad the did.

Ronnie James Dio and Yngwie Malmsteen did an absolutely incredible cover of Aerosmith Dream on...

Back to the Band. My Morning Jacket does a great cover of “It Makes No Difference” by the Band.
