My thoughts overall I think he will be a solid backup. Last game he played in for Turkey right now in the tournament(saw the replays real quick on NBA TV) and he was 5 for 7 and had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

personally, I think he's a wasted roster space...and we're screwed if Noah misses major time.

Even if noah misses major time i think taj can pick up the slack.
Don't expect big things from Omer but he will be a solid backup

It's hard to have a real firm opinion on what Asik can do. He's been a defensive monster in Europe, but he has very little offensive game outside of the putback dunk or the open dunk after someone leaves him because he has no offensive game.

Is he going to be a good defender on the NBA level? Well, he's going to have a whole different level of competition coming at him, but I think he'll likely be an okay bench big man in terms of getting some boards and helping shut down the paint.

If Noah goes down he's not going to come in and provide a Noahesque game, but neither is Boozer's back up, Rose's backup, Deng's backup etc..

I think Asik will be a poor mans Noah. Most centers these days don't have much more than the open dunk anyway so I'm not worried. I'd just want him to bring it on the defense end, which he should do.

We know he's not a suitable backup, but Omer gets a chance because he has the potential to improve throughout the season. I don't think the front office would accept him as a backup, if he didn't show them something special during workouts and practice scrimmages.

1 thing is working in our favor, and that's the lack of legit Centers in the NBA right now. Sure if we get hit with injuries, and we will, teams like Orlando, Boston, LA, and even NJ, will pwn us hard. Our problem is that every big available can give us something, but take away another aspect in return. There was no perfect fit off the market when it comes to quality and price. At least we have enough chips to make a trade before the deadline, we still have Chris Richards as a deep reach backup in D-League if we are desperate enough, and the Croatian 6'11" guy who averaged close to a double double in SL... Trent Plasiad*sp or whatever his name is, but he looked pretty good.

I think having Kurt Thomas there will help adjust him and show us if he's worth anything.

I honestly dont see him seeing much playing time unless Noah gets injured. I think it would benefit him to watch and learn before actually playing for awhile. Towards the end of the season I'd like to see him get some playing time and obviously any blowout game he should play. Mostly though this season to me he's a 12th man who will see little playing time.

I agree with pretty much all of this lol. Overall im not saying hes going to be someone like Noah or any other center in the league, but overall I think he will improve over the years(hopefully) and become a decent backup for our team.

I don't know. He hasn't proven anything but I can see him turning into a birdman type player. To me, thats a suitable back up. Might not be year one but he has shown to be decent in the world championships and would be a first round pick if he didn't have contract issues.

He won't get much playing time this season I expect. The bulk of backup center minutes will go to Taj & KT. I'm extremely hesitant when it comes to Euro big men, especially Euro big men that can't shoot outside of 5ft. His job this year is to learn the english language, learn the playbook, learn from the vets, & get his feet a lil wet. Time will tell if this kid was worth 3 2nd Rnd picks.

We'll see what he truly has to offer come season. Til then, I'll just be happy they added a guy like him. Hope he works out well for the team. :dealwithit:

"Out of all the overseas prospects I have scouting for my posts this week, Omer Asik will probably have lowest amount of production this year. His body simply isn’t ready for the NBA game. That doesn’t mean I think he will be a bust or that I think the Bulls made a poor decision bringing him over now. It’s actually the opposite.

I think the Bulls made a very smart decision bringing Asik over this year. It is obvious that he won’t be challenged in the Turkish League, and if a player doesn’t get challenged they don’t improve. While he isn’t going to get many minutes, he will be competing against guys like Carlos Boozer every day in practice (or guys trying to make the pros in the D-League) and that will make him better. In addition to that, he will be working under a NBA-quality strength and conditioning program and that will make him stronger. If he can get stronger with his skill-set, that already makes him better (even before he starts adding to his game).

So while you may not see much from Omer Asik this year, I think he will be a big man to watch two years from now."

Mr. Pruti gives a good assessment of Asik's abilities. Very detailed also.

Oh yeah I remember looking at this too lol. Very good btw. Videos showed some interesting things. IMO like Noah, the main thing he needs to work on is his strength and bulk up and hopefully not be like how Pau Gasol used to be and how he used to be shoved around at times(not saying hes going to be like Pau Gasol but you know what I mean.)

I know what you mean...I just wish he could be like Gasol offensively...that would be great, but highly unlikely...

The way I see it, Asik will probably spend a lot of time in the D-League and we won't see much of him during the season barring injury this year. However, hopefully all this talk about his potential and whatnot is true and in a couple years, he can be a legit backup. However, from what I've seen and read of his game, he's got literally no offensive game whatsoever. He shoots like...Ben Wallace/Andris Biedrins percentages from the FT line. So hopefully, he can get as good as those guys are defensively.
