Daniel Carcillo isn’t afraid to drop the gloves with anyone. And he isn’t afraid to speak his mind. The Sun-Times cornered him for a one-on-one chat.
Everyone knows the player on the ice; how would you depict yourself off it?
I love my family. I love my friends. I love going home in the summer and being able to spend time with my grandparents and my parents. I still have all my childhood buddies. I’m pretty much the exact opposite. I’m a pretty calm guy off the ice. I like to have fun in life and try to see the good things. If something irks me or gets me upset, I usually take it out on the ice.
How many teeth have you lost?
Just two.
One fight you’d like to have back?
Yeah, Darcy Hordichuk in Nashville. I don’t know if I’d like to fight him again, but obviously I would if I had to. He’s a tough guy, a strong guy. He beat me up pretty good. Yeah, I’d like to try it again.
Your best fight?
Probably when I one-punched Krys Barch. It makes you feel invincible.
What were you and Tomas Kopecky saying to each other when you were nose-to-nose in the Stanley Cup finals?
I couldn’t really understand too much what he was saying. And I’m sure he couldn’t understand what I was saying. I’ve seen the clip played a couple of times. It’s just banter.
What did Jeff Carter say to you when you hit him instead of Kopecky?
It was the hardest he’s ever been hit. I was like, “Well, you should’ve gotten out of the way.”
What do you listen to before games?
Led Zeppelin. I’m into the Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, [Creedence Clearwater Revival], those types of bands. Metallica.
Is the Philly media as tough as they say it is?
Yeah. It’s ridiculous. . . . If you lose, people look for excuses, and they nitpick. They make stories out of nothing. It’s unfortunate. That’s just the way it is. It’s kind of their culture. People are kind of outspoken and rude.
What do you know about the Chicago media and fans?
Not much. I know that fans are passionate, and they jumped on board since the ownership [changes] and [when they] brought in John McDonough. It’s been a culture change. The players had a big part to do with that. I’m excited.
What do you want to see most in Chicago? Wrigley Field. Soldier Field.
