Confirming. 37 year old d-man Brian Rafalski will announce his retirement with 1 year remaining on his deal at $6 mil.

Thought Lids would retire before him. Wow.

Nick Kypreos tweeted that Rafalski played without an ACL during the playoffs. Now between his knee and back it's probably time. I would love to see the Wings make a play for Shea Weber (I'm from Detroit). He loved playing for Babcock in the Olympics and Lidstrom asked to be paird with him during this year's All-Star game. That would give the Wings a top notch defenceman to go into the future with. The days of giving up 35-40 shots a game have to end before they can take another serious run at the Cup.

That just might persuade Lids to put off retirement another year. Holy hell would that be a monster pair.

Weber has been "saying" all the right things - that he wants to stay in Nashville and money isn't such of a big deal, etc. I think he puts his money where his mouth is (or lank thereof so to speak) and be a decent bargain in Nashville.

Weber to Detroit would make sense for both parties. Classy organization that does it right, you sign with them for slightly less money then you could get with a random team because you know you will be in contention every year.

If he weren't restricted, this might make sense.

If he is restricted, which I didn't know, he isn't going to Detroit :)

Raffy was very underrated.

Guys like him, Rolston, Knuble don't get much appreciation as they should.

His salary is still on Detroit's books

When a player aged 35 or older signs a multi-year contract, his average salary is counted against the team's salary cap during every year of the contract, even if the player retires before the contract is up.

did he sign it before he was 35 though?

He signed in July 2007...he was born in 1973, thus he was only 34

Can't imagine how Weber could end up in Detroit. If they offer sheet him - it would go against two Detroit tendancies. The first is not overpaying players and the 2nd is it would cost them their next 4 first round picks. And I can't see Nashville straight up trading him to Detroit, who they probably consider their biggest threat/rival.

Makes me wonder though...would Detroit and Chicago do a deal? Not sure they have since the Chelios trade. They may be interested in Hjalmarsson though.

Yeah, I didn't realize he was only an RFA. The other name that has popped up a couple of times here is Bieksa from Vancouver. Also a mention of Jovanoski.

i'm still trying to find it, but a situation like this is why the Hossa and Pronger deals were being investigated. It may be that the cap hit goes away and the salary counts.

He was actually 33 when the deal was signed. This deal is different than some of the others that were investigated. If the deal had sliding salaries and he was walking away from a salary of 1 mil, after making 7-8 in early years of the contract, then the NHL might have a problem with it. That would be clear cap circumvention. He's walking away from 6 mil though. There's no issues here.

The bummer for Detroit is that they may open all this cap space up in an off-season with a poor free agent crop. So they may need to trade assets to fill their roster and remain a Stanley cup contender.

I was using there deals as an xample thatthe drop offs in salaries play a factor, Rafalski's remains the same so we'll see how it plays out, pretty sure Detroit pays it or some of it

Weber isn't going anywhere.

And apparently, neither is Lidstrom. Can't see him leaving Detroit now.

Also... time to move Meatball to Detroit!

Rafalski had a great career. He was often overlooked by more "high-profile" names, but I always liked the guy. Another great Polish-American athlete. :)
