Shocking that Byrd would do this, he never seemed like that kind of player, and I'm not just saying that because he sucks.

Seriously when Alex Sanchez tested positive that told me anyone was possibly using. Apparently Byrd tested positive for an Estrogen blocker that dopers use to mitigate the side effects of steroids.

Just thought of this, but...if suspended, does this mean the Cubs don't have to pay 50 games' worth of Byrd's salary?

Yeah that is interesting to think about Rice. The BoSox were paying some of it as well. So I wonder who gets the benefit of those 50 games of upaid time.

My guess is the Cubs since they are paying the bulk of it.

But maybe each gets some money back

I think the trade entailed that the Cubs had to send money, so if they had to send all of it at once it seems that Boston gets the benefit. But I don't see why the transactional rules would penalize the Cubs here. Maybe someone should e-mail Muskat and make her do her job

Shocking? Seriously? His trainer was Victor Conte

Yeah Rozner tweeted earlier that Byrd was quoted as saying that Conte could teach him how to beat the tests but he would have to ask him. That was in 2011.

I had completely forgotten about the Conte thing.

Do you know if the Cubs are off the hook for some of that salary?

no clue, i'm not sure what the rule is for that

if they are,in some nuance, then it makes me even more glad we traded him

I think it's entirely dependent on whether the Cubs had to send all the money to the new team (Boston) all at once or if they are allowed to pay it in installments as if the guy is still on the payroll (i.e. per game check). If it's the former then I wonder if Boston just returns the part of the money that the Cubs gave them that they now don't have to pay to Byrd.

The Cubs won't recoup any of the $6.5MM released outfielder Marlon Byrd is being paid this year despite his unpaid 50-game suspension, writes Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Via MLBTR.

Lame.

I didn't think so... as he was on the Red Sox payroll at the time of the suspension... and I'm pretty sure the Cubs had to send all of the cash at the time of the trade. That's usually how it works.
