Hey guys,

Since it's offseason and a little slow, I hope you won't mind if I try to get a little help from you all. I teach for a University, and next fall I've been asked to take over teaching a course on Law & Legal Institutions.

One of the things I've always done in my classes is start each one with a song related (in some cases very tenuously!) to the day's topic. I'd like to do that with this new class as well, but my current music collection is a little short on songs related to law/legal institutions. I have a ton of songs related to going to prison, so I think I'm set for the weeks covering criminal law and punishment. Beyond that....

I'm really short of songs related to civil law, regulation, court structure, and law in a theoretical sense. I have some about law school and lawyers, but some of them are pretty lame so I'd love to upgrade. Also, I'm suppose to do two weeks on tribal sovereignty, and I only have two songs even remotely related to Native American rights.

So, if anyone has some suggestions for those areas I'm lacking, I'd really appreciate it. They don't have to have a positive view of the law, and I don't mind some bad language either.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Are there any songs about this stuff?

Well, the song doesn't have to be specifically and only about the topic, I'd just like something related. Like, for an example, I'm using California Sex Lawyer for one of the days about court personnel, and on one day I'm using Pink Floyd's The Trial. I just thought with as many people as post on here there would be some ideas I hadn't thought of yet. I'm 14 songs short of a full semester, and the only other thought I've had is resorting to court-related TV theme songs.

The songs themselves aren't necessarily to teach anything, but I think it's kind of fun. What else do you do with those dead 5 minutes waiting for class to start?

Maybe "Don't Download This Song" by Weird Al? If you do anything with copyright.

You might want to check out Wyclef Jean for the tribal stuff. Not sure if he did anything related to that, but he does do a lot of immigration related stuff, so he might have something similar.

Well not exactly a legal song, but if you're after music about tribal land rights for me it's hard to go past both Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning and Yothu Yindi - Treaty (admittedly from an Australian Aboriginal rather than Native American perspective).

Not sure there's so many songs about legal institutions though, maybe Warren Zevon - Lawyers, Guns and Money? ;)

Apparently there is a monopoly theme song, but I don't think it's recognizable enough to be useful.
