Derek Jeter announced Wednesday that he will retire after the 2014 season.
Many assumed that 2014 could be it for the Yankee captain and it's now official. "So it was really months ago when I realized that this season would likely be my last," Jeter wrote in a statement. "As I came to this conclusion and shared it with my friends and family, they all told me to hold off saying anything until I was absolutely 100 percent sure. And the thing is, I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart. The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball." Jeter was limited to just 17 games last season due to a laundry list of injuries, but he's hoping for bounce back as he makes his farewell tour around the majors. The 39-year-old is currently sitting on 3,316 career hits. The future Hall of Famer is 119 hits away from moving into sixth-place on the all-time list.
