I forgot whose game was being broadcast but one of the commentators suggested that the goalies weren't really tying down the top part of their shin pads anymore to allow for a better "wall" when they splay down on their knees to cover up the 5-hole.

I was wondering, for those of you who either know or have played goalie before, do goalies also wear the traditional shinguards that non-goalies wear underneath the thicker shin pads? I ask because I recall at one point watching a NHL game where the goalie went to his knees to block a shot and the puck skipped up and went into the space between the shin pad and his leg. He was not a happy camper as the puck pretty much fucked up his knee.

^^^ Goalies do not wear shin guards, like skaters do, under their equipment. A lot of them have basically an extended pad that will basically stand up under the goalies pants (attached to the leg pad) and when they go down in the butterfly that pad will be exposed and cover above the knees a little. Still there is usually a gap because a goalie should never be on their knees exposing that area if they go into the butterfly properly.

Hockey monkey calls them "thigh boards" and they are usually attached to the leg pads.

Cool, thanks. I've never played goalie so I only have the regular shin guards. Most goalies I've played with tie down their shin pads completely so that area isn't exposed.
