I' m not so sure about his point system, but I don't see a better way. The author is open about the holes in it too. It is a very good read. I would have guessed 1917 as well.

For the Sox? Golden era had to be the first two decades, and maybe the 50s-through the mid 60s.

I'd take the 2000's over the "go-go" era. Three division titles and a World Series Championship is preferable to one AL Pennant and a bunch of second, third, and fourth place finishes even if those were First Division back in that period.
