Executives around the NBA increasingly believe that ballyhooed draft prospect Jabari Parker will choose to stay an extra year at Duke rather than enter the NBA draft this June, according to Sam Smith of Bulls.com. Parker, who grew up in Chicago, is No. 3 on both the DraftExpress and ESPN Insider prospect rankings, and his absence from this year’s draft would deal a blow to teams banking on a top pick in what’s supposed to be one of the best classes in years.
The presence of Jahlil Okafor, a former AAU teammate of Parker’s who’ll enter Duke next season, is weighing heavily on Parker’s mind, the executives believe. Parker also places a high value on education and feels he owes it to Duke to contribute to a better season than the Blue Devils are having so far this year, Smith hears. Parker has also seen the benefits that staying in school has provided to NBA stars in the past.
Recruiting analyst Tom Konchalski told Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv in November, when Okafor revealed he would go to Duke, that he thought the decision might influence Parker to stay in college another year so they could play together. The idea seemed far-fetched at the time, but now it appears it could indeed come to fruition. Parker, a 6’8″ freshman forward, won’t have to make his call on this year’s draft until the spring, so there will be plenty of time for him to go back and forth.

That would be great news for Duke and NCAA fans and terrible news for a lot of fans in the NBA.

Truth. Next year should be decent though. 'Bout time Duke got a legit big man on campus.

Will be good for his game and for Duke. Duke will be huge favorites next year with him and Okafor as well.

Players should have to stay in college for 2 years. Would benefit a lot of players and the college game.

Don't kid yourself -- we all know that the only reason Jabari would stay is because Fisch is going to transfer there and throw down quadruple doubles on a nightly basis.

Barring injury, the kid is guaranteed to be the #1 or #2 overall pick in the draft.

I don't see him staying in school for another year.

Jabari is not like every other highly-touted, star athlete that has come before him. He was a model student in high school (3.7GPA, graduated with honors), is extremely humble (even more so than our beloved/scorned MVP), and is heavily involved in the Mormon faith. He comes from a stable, well-to-do family with great values. Since his junior yr, when the country started to take notice, he has realized and embraced his role model status stating on multiple occasions that he feels "a big responsibility to be a good example".

It's extremely rare to find a 17yr old that grounded and mature, with the amount of pressure to become successful levied on their shoulders. I think it's entirely within the realm of possibility that Jabari stays another year and maybe even two. Heck he could even stay all four. However, if Duke wins the tourney this year, it's very possible he will leave for the NBA. All I know is that there's never been a young star like this kid & I'll root for him no matter what team he ends up on.

Good points, but it's going to be very difficult to pass up a #1 pick, if he continues to perform at his current level. It's easier to assume you're going to stay another year during the season and such, but once the season ends and the draft comes to focus, it's quite a bit different. Jabari has the ability to play on the biggest stage at a significant level next year.

I mean, it's highly doubtful that Jabari would fall very far in the draft if he were to stay, but injuries are always possible, other players might prove to be better candidates(such as his potential teammate next year, Okafor), and/or Jabari has a sophomore slump.

Point is, I can see Jabari staying another year, but I think it's more likely that he leaves. Hard to say exactly, though, at this point. Gotta think that Jabari will weigh how Duke does this year into his decision.

BTW, Brandon Knight was a similar kind of kid(I think he had a 4.3 GPA in high school IIRC), and he decided to be one and done. To be fair, Knight did play for Calipari LOL.

He won't be the #1 pick unless the Jazz or Bucks get the #1 pick and think they already have a big for the future. Joel Embiid has to much potential to pass up and he's already very good and he's barely been playing.

Agree 100%. Living in Kentucky it is crazy how much UK and Calipari cycle through their top freshmen. Most only go to UK to get the exposure for a NBA run, and many do not succeed.

I've maybe told this story before, but it's worth repeating:

I'm friends with a high school basketball coach who coaches in the Chicagoland area. His father is a big time basketball coach in Illinois. So my buddy's dad get the chance to coach the McDonalds all-stars (or some other high school basketball all-star game) that was being played at the United Center. My buddy tags along for the practices because he gets to work with the top high school players in the country, plus he got a two night stay in the Trump Tower for free.

So one day after practice, the team boards a luxury coach bus back to the Trump. There was also a girls all-star game going on and both the girls and the guys were in some penthouse suite that was fully decked with a dj, flat screens, xbox, playstations - the works. My buddy says **** all this and heads to the fitness center in the Trump. Walks in, the place is near dark and there is only one person in there on a treadmill. It's Jabari Parker. He's doing his thing on the treadmill and the whole time he has this I-Pad he's watching and using the touch screen like crazy.

My buddy walks behind him just to see what he's watching and it's game film. While all of the other high school all-stars (probably a lot of NCAA starters) are partying upstairs in a penthouse, Jabari Parker is on a treadmill watching game film.

Anyways, I know a couple guys from Simeon and they told me that if Okafor was going to Duke, the likelihood of Jabari staying a second year would greatly increase.

Larry Sanders wouldn't prevent the Bucks from taking Embiid.

Well he did help recruit Okafor...didn't he? With that comment alone he helped recruit Okafor if it is indeed true.

Parker will go pro- don't kid yourself.

 I have no dog in the fight.

I understand.

I didn't mean to say I didn't believe you- but highly touted prospects since the age of 16 like Jabari don't stay in school longer than they need to. Nor should they.
