The Ryan Mallett showcase didn’t work as intended, but the backup quarterback wasn’t offered much help last night in the Patriots’ preseason opener against the Redskins, Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports.

Mallett only completed 5-of-12 passes for 55 yards as the Pats fell to the Redskins, 23-6, at FedEx Field. He was outdueled by fellow trade-bait backup Kirk Cousins, who was 9-of-13 for 103 yards and a touchdown and helped the Redskins build a 13-0 lead in the first half.

Rookie Jimmy Garoppolo’s surprisingly productive performance was particularly noticeable after Mallett’s struggles. The second-rounder completed 9-of-13 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown in his first NFL action, and wide receiver Brian Tyms had five receptions for 119 yards and the scoring grab.

Oh.....he sucked.

Garoppolo looked like friggin' Dan Marino compared to Mallett. Both sides of Belicheats team looked dreadful....I'm gonna think that it is because he is not playing the vets.....but.....there are a lot of new faces on this team.....vets included.....and many of them did play.......poorly. New England is not hitting the panic button quite yet....but this game should be concerning.

For crying out loud! Mallett destroyed Brady in every category. He threw 5 more completions than Brady and for 55 more yards. Brady and the offense totaled a combined 0 yards of total offense when on the field. Mallett dominated and will continue to dominate, BB would be wise to trade Brady for a 3rd and stick with the young gun.

Adam Schefter: Mallet was never even close to being traded ever. He was never close to being traded during the draft either. He said that on ESPN earlier.
