On Monday night LeBron James, the reigning MVP of the NBA, participated in a pick-up game as part of his LeBron James Skills Academy camp. During the game a 6?4? guard from Xavier named Jordan Crawford put down a two-hand dunk over James. No big deal, right?
Wrong.
The dunk was caught on videotape. Which, in itself, isn’t that that newsworthy. (Embarrassing videos of NBA players getting dunked on or getting beat at HORSE by civilians have been must-see video on YouTube for years.)
What was newsworthy was the way that Nike handled the situation afterward.
According to a report from CBSSports.com, a representative from Nike named Lynn Merritt went around to all of the cameramen after the game and confiscated their videotapes, which included footage of The Dunk.
Says Ryan Miller, a freelance photographer videotaping the game,
“[Merritt] just said, ‘We have to take your tape. They took it from other guys, too. LeBron called Lynn over and told him something. That’s how I knew his name was Lynn. LeBron said, ‘Hey, Lynn. Come here.’ There’s nothing I can think of besides LeBron just not wanting it online. It’s a good story to tell people, I guess. But then again, I’m kind of pissed. I lost my tape.”
In a move that will forever go down in history as “DunkGate”, Nike removed all traces of footage of The Dunk. They treated the LeBron James Skills Academy, a camp with no policy against videotaping, like communist China.
If we don’t like the evidence, we’ll make it disappear.
And they did.
