The Padres have officially agreed to a two-year, $13MM extension with outfielder Seth Smith, as originally reported by MLB.com’s Corey Brock (Twitter links). The deal includes a club option for 2017.

I know some had mentioned him as a potential target in the offseason. Sadly, a bad group of hitters is getting worse.

Wow. That seems like quite a discount. Good for both sides.

Smart move for the Pads.

He came into his own on that team.

Too bad he would have been a solid fit.

What they have next year:
Alcantara
Valbuena
Baez
Rizzo
Bryant
Castro
Castillo

5 players to cover 3 spots.

Easy method:
Bryant RF, Extend Bonifacio CF, Alcantara LF Valbuena 3B, Castro SS, Baez 2B, Rizzo 1B, Castillo C.

2 SH, 2 LH hitters 4 RH hitters. Pretty balanced. Not much investment to extend Bonifacio.

This would leave more resource to invest into the rotation.
