The Phillies released second baseman Luis Castillo, tweets Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. It was a brief trial for Castillo, who was picked up nine days ago after the Mets released him on March 18th. All along, the understanding was that Castillo would make the Phillies out of Spring Training or be released.

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley is dealing with chronic knee pain, and hasn't offered a timetable aside from saying he aims to be back before the All-Star break. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. currently isn't thinking about putting Utley on the 60-day DL. While he's out, the Phillies will apparently go with Wilson Valdez and some combination of Michael Martinez, Pete Orr, and Delwyn Young. The Phillies opened a spot on the 40-man roster yesterday by outrighting Matt Rizzotti, which according to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer means a spot is open for either Young or Mike Stutes (Twitter link).

Rather just have Barney play..

I don't like Baker or DeWitt as options either.

Ya I agree with this, but I figured it may be a possibility with the Cubs not having a standout 2B that they could sign him to a minor league deal.

I still think barney is a year away, i like him but i think he has another season here in Iowa to go. But if Dewitt/Baker are choking horribly and he is here in Des Moines mashing then call him up and give him the shot.

And as far as Castillo goes if he will sign cheap i say give him a shot, but if he wont no reason to spend money on him when the team is not in position to compete.

Why do people want Barney? He is awful. He can't hit his way out of a paper sack.

He's had a decent spring. And to be fair, neither can Baker or DeWitt. Baker's only around for versatility at 3B.

Then explain why his stats are so good this spring. Even if it is spring, if you bat over .350, you can definitely hit your way out of a paper sack.

Come on CO have you watched this spring? Sure he is not a superstar but he is a good baseball player. Like i said i think he has one more season in des moines, but dewitt and baker are nothing special. I mean do you want every fucking guy to be Evan Longoria or Hanley Ramirez? You cant have that so watch the guy develop into a solid pro the next couple of years. There are only a handful of Superstar second basemen in the league its not a position that is a common strong one for most clubs.

I think Barney is more than fine to plug in at 2nd since DeWitt had a horrid spring, and give Baker time against lefties, because he destroys them. Put Barns 8th in the lineup, and put no offensive pressure on him. As stated, he's not a superstar type player, but he's more than adequate. He doesn't hit for much power, but he's got above average speed, and hits for average.

I like the kid a lot, and I was happy to hear he is on the team, and probably starting at 2nd.

I want no part of Castillo. Also while Barney may not be anything special offensively, but DeWitt is horrendous and Baker is a utility player who should only be played against LHP
