Not seen any video of it yet, but apparently in today's pre-season game against KC, Chapman threw a 99 mph fastball that was lined right back at him off the bat of Salvador Perez. Perez was reportedly "weeping" when the game was cancelled shortly after.

ESPN is reporting there is no video...but he never lost consciousness and suffered a laceration over his eye.

Post any reports/videos you find. Hope he's okay. :(

I can't believe they haven't made pitchers wear batting helmets yet to be honest. This is like the 4th or 5th time this has happened in the past 5 years and they made 1B coaches do it after like one time.

I would think it would be pretty tough to throw with a helmet on for starters, and secondly, hitters get beaned all of the time with helmets on and face ramifications because of it.

Not sure wearing a helmet is going to protect a whole lot with the ball screaming back at you faster than you threw it.

Just my opinion.

Obviously not on the same scale, but my heart just dropped watching Javier Baez slow to get up after colliding with Anthony Giansanti in LF. Looked like a wrist injury, and we know how those can zap a guy's power. Stayed in the game, hopefully it doesn't nag him...

It would protect you more than a baseball cap would. I don't recall any hitters getting fractured skulls like McCarthy did. I'm not saying it has to be a batting helmet but something that gives more protection than what they have surely should be mandatory.

I guess you would have to figure how many pitches on average are thrown each game, every game, and then calculate the odds of it happening.

I think they may have to just let the chips fall where they may at this point.

Sure their are isolated incidents, but to me they are very few and very far between given the number of pitches thrown on a daily basis.

My point is if they made it mandatory for 1st/3rd base coaches how can they not for pitchers who are in as much if not more danger? Even if it "makes pitchers uncomfortable" when pitching, that's not really an excuse. It's the same thing the NHL went through with helmets and they eventually force them into the game. Personally, I don't really care what athletes do. If they don't want to wear helmets fine. If they want to risk long term side effects with roids, so be it. I don't really care that they "tainted the game" because they've been using greenies and various other crap long before. All I'm saying is from a league standpoint it makes no sense. And what's going to happen is possibly this time espn will run a shit load of outside the lines coverage and force them to change something by media scrutiny. Maybe not this time. Maybe not the next but it's eventually going to happen.

They need to wear a clear mask/lightweight helmet. This is sadly preventable. Or move the mound back a couple of feet.

Maybe they can put nets around the on deck circle too. That would have prevented Encarnacion from his injury.

If you are going that far with pitchers wearing face guards or helmets, than maybe pitchers ought to get a lifetime ban for beaning a batter in the head. You know that some of those are intentional.

The risk is pretty bad there too.

If this were the nfl they would already have this. Like I said, I personally don't care if players want to put themselves in harms way. Lord knows they are paid enough to do so. But the league is going to be in trouble sooner or later from this. This may as well be the definition of a cover your ass situation. They just changed the rules with home plate collisions which again another CYA situation.

Throwing at the head intentionally should result in a 50 game ban. Intentional tosses are not often thrown at the head. I would be more inclined for the hitter to wear a c-flap on the helmet protecting his exposed cheek/eye socket/jaw.

They changed the rules, because a #1 catcher like Posey gets paid a lot of money and has tremendous value to the team. Too much on the line, and MLB was the only level of ball left where that play at the plate was allowed.

Yes. So they just have to approve some more options that offer even more protection to the face/temples, etc.

Didnt they already come out with a pitchers helmet or something similiar? I think it should be optionial to wear.

http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_...rotective-caps-approved-major-league-baseball

The problem with making it optional to wear is athletes are stupid and will resist change. It's the same with WR not wearing thigh pads, hockey players choosing not to wear helmets....etc. All it takes is for one pitcher to die and then have that pitchers family file a lawsuit against baseball. As I've said, I personally don't care what they do but sooner or later someone is going to get the bright idea to sue them.
