One thing that I don't know has been studied is the impact on the fans. When you've been a fan of a franchise for your entire adult life (and part of your child life), it can be addicting to watch. You know it's bad for the guys who play, and yet they choose to play, and we choose to watch.
I do feel bad for the guys who are beaten up or broken up afterwards though.
