Is Baseball Getting Too Expensive For Kids? | FanGraphs Baseball

Good topic for an article. I don't actually know how much one would realistically spend on an average kid who just wants to play Little League, and I definitely have no idea how much you'd have to spend on a kid who was actually really good at it and needed the investment to get ahead.

This year, going to have to buy a bat, two different gloves (IF & pitcher's glove.... he wants to pitch... and there are glove regulations here for pitchers), cleats, his uniform, injury liability insurance, and the initial $125 fee. All told, it's looking like it's going to be around $350... and this is before the insurance quotes.

The scary thing is, the local All Star team made it to the LL WS last year... and most of those kids on that squad were 11 and are returning to their regular teams this year. My son throws hard enough to sting my hand pretty badly, and I used to do bullpen warmups with pitchers throwing well over 90 when in college. Granted, that seems like a lifetime ago. He was recruited for his throwing strength, progressing power at the plate, and good range at 2B. So... if he gets pitching down in time, he could end up on a traveling All Star team. Being in West Texas, that's scary as everything is at least an hour to an hour and a half away.

Rice, the reality has been for many years...equipment is expensive and many of our inner-city youths do not get involved at a young age due to this issue. A hoop and a B-ball are cheaper.

God yeah, after LL I bought all new gear. 400 bucks for a bat, 60 for cleats, 80 for a glove, etc. but in LL I had like a 20 buck bat used my dads old glove and wore soccer cleats :smug:
