I bet you're right, but don't sharks need something to set off there senses like, a scent of some sort in the water? At the end of the day I thought they were pretty blind? I'm not sure they can distinguish between metal fish and metal boat thingie?

They also sense vibrations in the water. Theres so much crap in the water I dont think they can distinguish specific fish smell, I know they can smell blood, but I think they rely on the vibrations moreso than natural animal scent, save for the case of blood.

Don't forget electrical pulses from a fish's muscles.

Ahh... that's right. Should be interesting. But at the same time, when folks go into cages to swim with them they throw an aweful lot of chum in the water... I'd be as worried about whales swollowing them whole haha but I don't know if these things will be out far enough for either thing to happen?

Sharks' olfactory senses are very, very good. Their sight is average. They will sense the movement but they can tell the difference between normal swimming and a fish in distress (which means a meal). I think they will inspect it might test bite it but really won't mess with it. It has metal in it so it will give off a funny electromagnetic feel to the sharks so that's where the test bite might come in. And judging by the size only Whites are big enough to eat something that size so they are the only real danger to it.

Well if they are monitoring ships they might get into shipping lanes or even off coast oil platforms, so that is far enough out for predators.

go watch some of those youtube clips of the sharks shooting out of the water after carpet that's cut into the shape of a seal. Pretty crazy.

But there is chum in that water, they are already in hunter mode. However it is an awesome sight watching a 15-20 ft GWS coming 100% out of the water.

Tiger Sharks are nicknamed the garbage cans of the sea. It is amazing what they've found in their stomachs. GWS are more picky.

I don't think they all chum. I think the GW with it's poor eye sight, think the reflection is a seal. They do it both off the South African Coast and Austrailian Coast.

For all of the Shark Week Marathons I've watched...yes, shark's eyes are somewhat poor, but they do posess color vision. Smell, Vibration, and electrosense is what prings sharks in--vision just helps them aling for the kill.

Saw a nifty little experement with Great Whites where something black dosn't elicit much attention, something red elicits some attention, and somnething colored that bright yellow-green fluorescent, like the vests flaggots wear, they go after and explore.
