Decision on Listach was made by Cubs. Sveum says it wasn't anything Listach did. Would recommend him for any other coaching job.

The Cubs dismissed third base coach Pat Listach after Wednesday’s game, and were still evaluating interim hitting coach James Rowson’s status. The rest of manager Dale Sveum’s coaching staff will return in 2013. Listach, 45, was in his second season in his second stint with the Cubs. He was a coach or manager in the team’s Minor League system from 2000-08 before serving as the Nationals third base coach from 2009-10. Listach was the Cubs’ infield coach, and worked with second baseman Darwin Barney, who compiled a 141-game errorless streak.

“This is hard for me,” Barney said after getting the news. “He was one of the first people who really saw what I had and believed in it and voiced his opinion for me a couple years back. It’s tough. He’s going to be fine, he’s got a place in baseball and he’ll find work somewhere for sure. It’s hard to see him go. We spent a lot of time together preparing for these games and putting together the season I had defensively.

“Whenever I try to give him credit, he tells me, ‘It wasn’t me, it was all you. Don’t think I did anything,’” Barney said. “The reality is, he did [help]. He turned me onto a lot of different ideas and different things. It’s just sad, it’s sad to see him go.”

Rowson was promoted from Minor League hitting coordinator to replace veteran hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo in May. The Cubs batted .240 this season, ahead of only the Astros in the National League.

The Chicago concluded their season today with a 5-4 win vs. the Houston Astros. Moments after the game the Cubs informed 3rd base coach/infield coach that he will not be brought back next season. Listach was the only coach let go, but the Cubs are still evaluating what to do with interim hitting coach James Rowson. He took over for Rudy Jaramillo of whom was fired mid-season. The Cubs will decide if they want to remove the interim tag from Rowson or hire a new guy. The Cubs will figure that out in the early stages of the off-season.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum said; "he (Listach) did a great job, and it's not anything he did".

Cubs infielder Darwin Barney also spoke on the matter and said; "this is hard for me because he was one of the first people that really saw what I had and believed in it and voiced his opinion for me a couple of years back." "He's going to be fine. He has a place in baseball and will find work for sure, but it's hard to see him go."

Listach made Barney into the defender he is today and Barney does give him the credit. So, Barney is in a big lost right now.

Everybody in the Cubs organization does expect Listach to find another job fast. He's a well-respected guy, a smart guy and teams will snag him up very soon.

Listach was Mike Quade's bench coach in 2011 and Sveum made him his 3rd base coach last season.

The Cubs will start conducting interviews this Winter for the opening and Sveum said, he does have people in mind. He had people in mind when he took over the job last year.

I wish Listach the best going forward and the best of luck with a new adventure!

Why? It wasn't his fault majority of the team was filled with minor league bums.

Even the front office has absolved Sveum of any major blame for this season. They all appreciate the fact that he's a good coach and teacher and so were the rest of his staff.

With Listach gone does that leave Lester Stroude as the only holdover from the Quade staff?

Sounds that way. I assume we'll find out more in the coming days. Also, Bobby Valentine is expected to be fired soon and I'm sure that's one name that's not going to be mentioned to replace Listach

Ryne Sandberg also expected to join the MLB staff in Philly. Just rumors for now though.

They're grooming him to replace Manuel, imo. It'd still be too soon to bring him to Chicago. We're not going to contend next year, and there's no point in having the drunkards/non Cub fans that occupy 80% of Wrigley to simultaneously chant a confusing "We Want Sandstone" in May.

I think Theo and Jed never had any intention in bringing in Sandberg. Sveum is their guy. He was the guy his protege wanted in Boston. Sandberg doesn't fit the philosophy that they are going to preach from top to bottom from now on. Ryno is a familar name, but unless there is regime change he isn't going to manage the Cubs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't they basically calling this season a wash anyways? Isn't the whole idea of Theo/Hoyer being here the long term planning?

You are correct, but they still need a guy who is malleable and who is able to oversee the players as they come up.

Yeah it is pretty clear that despite the every year being sacred talk earlier on that this year was entirely about clearing the decks of the Hendry era.
