Chicago Bears

– LB Pernell McPhee had an overall grade of +6.4 on Sunday, making it his third consecutive game at +5.2 or better. McPhee had a fairly quiet day as a pass rusher (0.0 pass rush grade, one hurry), but he more than made up for it by dominating against the run. The fifth-year player out of Mississippi State finished the afternoon with a +5.6 run defense grade to go with a 21.1 run stop percentage, the highest percentage posted by any 3-4 outside linebacker so far this season.

– QB Jay Cutler returned from injury and had a solid game. He had a +0.8 grade for the day (+2.2 passing grade) and he made three big throws (including one on fourth down) during a very impressive, game-winning fourth quarter drive. Cutler was especially good in the short-passing game, completing 24 of 29 throws that traveled 10 yards or fewer through the air.

– Rookie NT Eddie Goldman had his best game of the season on Sunday, posting a +2.5 overall grade. Goldman recorded the first sack of his career, but where he really shined was in run defense, where he had a +3.0 grade. Goldman had one stop against the run, and he consistently ate up blockers in the middle of the line of scrimmage, forcing Raiders’ running backs out of their intended running lanes.

Top Performers:

OLB Pernell McPhee (+6.4)

NT Eddie Goldman (+2.5)

RT Kyle Long (+1.6)

LB Shea McClellin (+1.5)

FS Antrel Rolle (+1.4)

Yeah, I know. But I do think it's interesting that PFF essentially echoes what we're already saying. People were talking about McP, Goldman, some Long, didn't hear a ton about Shea, and Rolle went out early, but with a grain of salt, it's worth reading. MAYBE. Also, look at Jay with a +.8 overall but a +2.2 in passing. He did make some big passes. Wonder why Bennett didn't make the top five.

While PFF is not a perfect science, it is still a good indicator on performance. McPhee, Goldman, and Cutler all stood out on tape.

I guess my point is...if at the end of the season a guy has a good PFF score, chances are he had a good season. The whole Rodgers Chiefs game score in getting blown outta proportion.

No, it isn't. PFF, at best restates the obvious and then there are abortions like the low rating for P Mannings 7TD 0 INT 462 yard game in the 2013 opener and this gem from this season. A fucking negative rating for a game where Rodgers threw for 5 TD's 0 INTs and over 300 yards. And then they have the balls to try to explain why they are smarter than everyone else and that it was actually a sub par performance.

"Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers ended last night’s game with a -0.8 grade overall. This isn’t a bad game, just because the number begins with a minus, but it is an average grade very close to zero for a player who threw five touchdown passes, which seems crazy on the face of it. It’s not.

On the surface, Rodgers’ raw statistics paint the picture of one of the best games of the season. 333 passing yards, five touchdown passes, no interceptions, a 138.5 passer rating; Rodgers’ should be supplanting Carson Palmer in our team of the week as the top quarterback, not earning a grade with a minus in front of it, right?

Well, not if you dig a little deeper into Rodgers’ performance on a play-by-play basis."

Certain positions and elements of the ranking are weird and really hard to judge. Since every single snap is equal Bennett's great catches and YAC plays to get first downs will be negated by plays he was blocking. Every blocking play on a run or pass protection is gonna effect and he's sometimes really good there, but they probably negated him there. It's a issue of a system to judge certain positions especially because of everything being Equal. Marshall is constantly high in games on the WR ranking because he run blocks so well that most run plays he at least is getting a neutral if not positive score.
