Figured with a week til the WC game id take a stab at what I think the Playoff Roster will look like..
Saw he usually went 16 and 9 with the Rays, im guessing he will take an extra pitcher in NL ..

C. Montero
Ross
IF. Rizzo
Castro
Russell
Bryant
Baez
LaStella
OF. Schwarber
Fowler
Coghlan
Soler
Jackson
Berry

SP. Arrieta
Lester
Hendricks
Hammel

Rel. Cahill
Wood
Rosscup
Ramirez
Strop
Rondon

Im thinking Maddon will go with Berry speed over anything Herrera will give.. most likely be a tough decision considering Herrera been there all year..

It probably comes down to Ramirez and Rodney
I figured he will take Ramirez if he feels he ready, otherwise it'll be Rodney. .

I chose Rosscup only because they needed another Lefty to go with Wood and he was best of what they have...

Is the roster different in each round or is the roster for round 1 (if playing) and round 2 seen as one set roster?

Pretty sure you can reset every round. The Wild Card roster is it's own thing so I wouldn't expect more than one other starting pitcher besides Arrieta to be on it. Likely Lester.

Agree that the only other starter on the roster will be Lester. Hope Joe is leaning towards 9 pitchers and 16 position players.

Likely only two starters on the roster, along with 7 relievers. Add Rodney, Richards or Edwards. The two additional position guys will probably be Denorfia and Szczur?

CINCINNATI -- Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon has never clinched a playoff berth with a week remaining in the regular season; it's giving him a chance to formulate a wild-card roster while taking a look at some of his bullpen arms.

The Cubs don't need to submit a roster until the day of the wild-card game next Wednesday, but work has begun on who might be on the team and, more importantly, in the starting lineup. Maddon assigned his stat guys to run numbers based on offense versus defense. In other words, how much defense can be sacrificed to keep a bat in the lineup -- especially in spacious PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

"You can get trapped overthinking it," Maddon said Monday. "I (gave them) some thoughts to play with. Run through them and throw it back at me."

There are several reasons to keep the better bats in the lineup over better defenders as starter Jake Arrieta doesn't exactly give up a ton of hard contact while the Cubs believe their defensive positioning gives them an advantage.

"We're pretty good at figuring out where the ball is going to be hit in advance," Maddon said. "You can take a shot in a certain spot with a little less defense with a little more bat."

It bodes well for Kyle Schwarber and Chris Coghlan to start if righty Gerrit Cole faces them. And because the Cubs are so deep, the lineup to start the game won't necessarily be the way they finish it. For example, Austin Jackson is a perfect late-inning replacement for either corner outfielder. Maddon confirmed he'll roster either 15 or 16 position players and either nine or 10 pitchers.

"It comes down to defensive replacements," Maddon said.

As for the bullpen, Maddon is searching for more reliable relievers and wants two in particular to get some action this week.

"I'd like to see (Zac) Rosscup at the right time," Maddon said. "Also, Carl Edwards. Put a little more heat on him."

At first glance you might not think Rosscup is playoff worthy but he might be the best option as a specialist against lefty hitters. Though he has a 4.39 ERA and some ugly numbers against righties, Rosscup has just a .578 OPS against lefties this year which includes a .158 batting average against and 12 strikeouts in 38 at-bats. Last year he struck out 13 of 25 lefties. When he's on he could be a better option than Clayton Richard or Travis Wood, at least for one batter.

Meanwhile, Edwards has only appeared in three games this year, giving up two hits, two walks and two runs. He may not be ready for prime time but his stuff is very good. Other pitchers in the mix for a roster spot and possible prominent role are Neil Ramirez and Fernando Rodney. Maddon will undoubtedly utilize them this week as they prepare for October baseball.
