1. Stalberg

I know I'm gonna catch shit for saying it, especially since I've been a hater, but this guy is at the top of my list for "didn't see that coming". I've been impressed with him this year and not just because of the scoring. He's made some nice dishes, and he hasn't been afraid to plow into someone who needs it.

2. Mayers

Damn, that dude flat beat the wall-eyed shit out of that kid last night. Carcillo couldn't even get there before the guy hit the ice. He has done a little bit of scoring (which I didn't see coming) and has done what I thought he should do from a protection standpoint. Been happy with this pickup.

3. Crawford

We knew he was good. I didn't know he was going to stand on his damned head every night.

4. Kane

Looks better than I expected in the center role. I knew he was a natural center, and you could always tell he prefers to pass over shooting, but man the kid has really gotten better and he is making some sick moves.

5. Hossa

Not that I'm actually surprised, but it's nice to see the guy with a full off-season of rest and recuperation. He is still nails on the puck and he still poke checks and gives it 100% on every shift. I'm glad to see him not so dinged up...

My two disappointments so far have been Montador and Brunette. I knew Montador was about as fast as molasses in a cold jar so I can't say I'm surprised. I am a little confused as to why Brunette hasn't seemed to gel through nearly a dozen games. He doesn't seem to have the punch I thought he would. I'd like to see a 22 and 25 out of him and I don't know that it's gonna happen.

Been a good season so far. If Brunette gets his swerve on and Keith and Seabs stay healthy I'm liking the look of this squad.

Mayers is great. Super smart player on and off the ice. Rarely ever makes a bad play and his willingness to beat some ass has helped change the feel of this team.
He is by far my favorite signing from this past off season.

Kruger is another part of the 4th line that I like. I never really saw much in him whenever he was up last year, but hes really found a game this year. Strong on the boards and with the puck... Good, hard working player.

I thought Carcillo would be a bust. He isnt. Glad to be wrong. He not only hangs with Kane and Hossa, but he makes a difference on that line. Nice to have someone out there talking some shit too.
