Potential 2010 plan

The departure of Gordon, along with the organization's supposed dissatisfaction with Tyrus of late, in addition to the drafting of JJ and Gibson, has clearly indicated, in my eyes, the organization's intentions for 2010, as well as, their intentions to acquire Bosh, if not another "good" big man, via a trade.

Lets start with the idea behind the draft picks. Contrary to the claims made by the FO, I do not believe that JJ and Gibson were drafted solely on them being BPA, rather I feel that there was an ulterior motive behind their selections (i.e. Gibson was drafted to replace Tyrus at some point and JJ was drafted to replace Deng in the event of a trade). Gibson's skills and physical attributes are analogous to those of Tyrus and JJ's position and abilities are similar, if not better suited (for our style of play), to those of Deng. Now, you may ask me, "what evidence do you have that they were drafted to replace Tyrus and Loul?" My explanation is based on our rumored interest in trading for Bosh.

If we were to trade for Bosh at some point, we would have to do two things: be able to match salaries in event of a trade and provide Toronto with an incentive to actually TRADE him to us over another team -- Toronto is going to want (and needs to get, if they are to survive the potential PR nightmare of trading their best player for peanuts) a young, athletic forward with "potential" to replace Bosh (i.e. Tyrus, who is also an expiring...so if he doesn't work out in Toronto, they can drop him) and another talent player (preferably an international player, since Toronto usually has a hard time attracting and KEEPING American players in Canada)for them to build around (i.e. Deng). Colangelo has had significant interest in Deng since his days Phoenix, and I assume little has changed, despite his recent play and health concerns, as Colangelo seems like the kind of GM who feels he could resurrect Deng's career if given the opportunity. The characteristics of the draft picks, along with the team's rumored desire to trade both Tyrus and Deng, seem to indicate that GarPaxDorf are going to base any trade package for Bosh + filler around Tyrus, Deng, + filler. While I do not know if it would be enough to secure Bosh in a trade, I feel as if this might be the FO's thinking at the moment.

Couple these thoughts around Omer Asik and his potential availability next summer. When the FO traded the three picks last summer to secure the rights to Asik, they did so because they felt that he had lottery talent and, presumably with 2010 in mind, to secure themselves in case Tyrus does not pan out (I believe we have a Team Option to bring him back). Due to the investment we made in Omer, along with our dissatisfaction with Tyrus, the drafting of Gibson, our rumored interest in Bosh, and Miller probably leaving next summer, I feel as if it would be safe to assume that the front office is hoping to be able to transform the front court from the current lineup of Tyrus, Miller, Gray, and Noah to Asik, Bosh, Noah, Gibson (again, I'm not sure if this WILL actually happen of if the FO actually thinks this scenario will actually come to fruition, but I think this is the direction to which they are leaning).

With this in mind, I feel as if our decisions in regard to the back court (i.e. not retaining BG's services....which I think was the plan all along), can lead us to the conclusion that the organization is gearing towards a run at Wade next summer. Currently, our back court essentially consists of Rose, Hinrich, and Salmons, which I do not think is the back court our FO envisions for us in the future, due to Hinirch's contract and Salmons' age. While I feel we will sign a cheap guard (i.e. Wafer, McCants, Parker, etc) for the short term to "replace" BG, I feel as if the goal is to ultimately trade Hinirch for expirings and a cheaper player/draft pick (hence the rumored talks with Portland for Blake and Outlaw, which I feel is a deal our FO would LOVE to be able to make, but will likely not be able to due to Portland's apparent preference for Andre Miller over Kirk), and/or to drop Salmons next summer if we cannot move Kirk for expirings, with the ultimate goal of clearing enough cap room to sign Wade, if he becomes available (GarPax has its fingers crossed). The team would obviously prefer to resign Salmons, albeit to a short term contract due to his age (i.e. a 3 year deal), but if he stands in the way of us singing Wade, then they will have no problem letting him go. However, if Wade does not become available (likely scenario), we have put ourselves in position to have stability at the 2 for the next few years with Salmons. If we trade Kirk, which Doug reported as a distinct possibility even though Gordon left, we should still be in a position to replace him either in next year's draft or FA.

To me, this is likely the organization's desired outcome moving forward. Do I feel that it's going to happen? Maybe, but it's unlikely due to the fact that it is going ot be hard to pry Wade away from Miami due to their ability to pay him more. To me, if this is indeed the front office's goal, then they are positioning themselves for a potential (summer of 2001-esque) letdown. To me, there is a greater possibility of Bosh teaming up with Wade in Miami than in Chicago. I even think there's a greater possibility that Bosh teams up with Lebron in either NY or Cleveland. While I hope we somehow get both Bosh and Wade, the chances of us landing both is slim.

Thus, I feel as if this is the Bulls' plan for 2010:

To Transform
PG: Rose/Hinrich
SG: Salmons
SF: Deng, JJ
PF: Tyrus, Gibson
C: Noah, Miller

Into

PG: Rose
SG: Wade
SF: Salmons/JJ
PF: Bosh/Gibson
C: Noah/Asik

If it happens, good for us. If not, I still feel that we have a few options for next summer to make us a good team.

damn, this was long as hell. Back to studying for the DAT's. joy.

That is what I think, as well. However, I think that this is what we're hoping happens, plus with Colangelo, you never know. If Deng turns it around this year, and if Bosh isn't traded away at that point, then it's a new ballgame, IMO. GM's and fans tend to have short attention spans. It's a "whathave you dont for me lately" kinda deal.

If Deng turns it around and returns to his near 20 and 10 form we will be in good position. If not it's back to the lottery.

i don't know if d-wade is the best fit in chicago next to rose, two ball-dominant guards.

Why -- in -- the -- hell -- Bosh -- comes -- here?

Is there any particular reason he can't just team up with Wade - whom already said he's going back to Miami and signing a extension. I tell you, Bulls are about to start this rebuilding mess all over again. First it was the Hinrich era, now they're about to do it with Rose. We had one of the best three point shooters in NBA history and we didn't want to go into Luxury Tax. Why they didn't just kept Gordon and Thabo, then somehow signed a big time low post presence, departing with a overpaid Deng. I'm not sure if you're going to find a better scorer/knock down shooter to complement someone like Brad Miller or Rose.
