With the Bears likely to do something mediocre in free agency at QB, and Foles contract with a potential out next season, the Bears would like to draft a QB that has more than backup potential. This option also allows them to add a premium offensive lineman which is desperately needed.
They can't count on Mac Jones being available. There will be guys like Kadarius Toney or Najee Harris who may be available at 20 that teams in the back half of the draft are going to consider trading up for. Trading out of 20 lands them a very late first/early second plus a late second round pick. That puts the Bears in position to grab Trask, an OT and another player in the 2nd that can contribute such as a WR or DE.
The Bears finally head in a different direction at QB. Selecting a very accurate, smart passer that was well coached in college by one of the best QB developers in CFB. Trask is a smart player, a great teammate and a student of the game. As a pure passer, he is one of the better prospects I have seen and is only getting passed over for a lack of athleticism. There is nothing wrong with having a smart and an accurate QB, especially if you can grab him in the late first or early second round.
It is an instant upgrade to the QB room and a player with the accuracy to make it in the league.
