Nice analytical article, however I disagree with the makeup of the 4th line -as the article stands now- there would be no checking line, which I don't think any team would ever leave off- including before there was a salary cap.

I don't think it entirely works, as I can't see the third line he uses being basically a slightly less firepowered 2nd line, and then having a 4th line of basically rookies and Brouwer.

I suppose financially it works- but, I don't know that that team wins in anything other than a video game based league.

Didn't get to the defensemen.

Liked the ideas for a second line -seems like the second line is basically interchangeable with the third line he used-- ok, that works... still -2 rookies and no checking line - dunno, not sold 100%. Think you can get lower priced and useful checkers, and go for a higher priced upgrade on the 2nd line.

Well it's the assumption that since the Bickell-Bolland-Frolik line was so effective shutting down and producing in the final 4 playoff games that you can pull that as your checking line.

They aren't gonna not sign Frolik and unless they trade Bolland he's so far proven to be better as a checking line center. The only other so called cheaper options are not signing Frolz or putting him on the 2nd line with Hossa... which is possible.

Key to note his roster salary is just under 60 Mil... but of course it includes hjalmarsson being traded.. for no talent that makes the NHL roster, eh just his hypothesis. I'm one I think maybe seems to be in the few, that is apposed to trading hjalmarsson.

I should point out that if it were my lineup then the 4th line would be the checking line, and the 3rd would be mostly a 2 way line, capable of doing both (of course, I suppose you could argue -and pretty well, mind you) that a line with Toews and Sharp is a 2 way line -or good enough, as well as whoever you find to fill out the 2nd line -if it is a similar style player to Toews (capable offensively and defensively) -would be as well, no matter who plays on wing there.

I could see Frolik working out on the second line. Oh well not long to wait now with all of this inter-seasonal stuff. :)

This team especially, really needs something that could be considered a checking line.

Seeing the Hawks get slapped around by the Canucks for the first 2 and a half games of the conf. quarter finals this year should have been enough to make getting some legitimate grit an off season priority.

Putting together an 'energy/checking' line doesn't take much. Some speed and a reckless willingness to throw the body around is all that's needed. A few guys that can keep things from getting out of hand.

The 4th line proposed in this article would be bad.

That defense is worse than last year's group. H4 is out for Peverley and Hendry is partnered with Leddy? Bad, real bad.

The only grit added to the forward group is Cole, which is a good start.
Give me one more, please.

Yeah, Hendry + Leddy is never going to happen (at least I hope to god it doesn't). They'd maybe see about 4 minutes of ice time a game. Lets all ask the Canucks how rolling 2 d pairings night after night works. And hell, Leddy deserves better than that.

I too wouldn't mind seeing Cole. Seems possible.

Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said that he will start negotiating with his restricted free agents once the NHL draft is over on Saturday.

Michael Frolik, Chris Campoli and Troy Brouwer are eligible for restricted free agency and Bowman said that the organization has already decided what RFA's they want to talk to. "We're certainly going to approach the off-season with that optimism and excitement that we can bring in some new players," Bowman said. "Once we find out where we're at and get our RFAs signed, we'll know exactly where we're at." The salary cap is expected to be $64 million in 2011-12 and that will give the Blackhawks a lot of flexibility, especially compared to the 2010 off-season where they were forced to trade three regulars to Atlanta and Kris Versteeg to Toronto in order to get under the cap. Stay tuned.
Chicago GM Stan Bowman thinks that Brandon Pirri will contribute at the NHL level next season.

The 20-year-old was drafted in the second round, 59th overall in the 2009 Entry Draft and after playing most of the season with Rockford of the AHL last season, Bowman thinks Pirri could be ready for prime time. "Brandon had an excellent ending to the season, but he's still a kid," Bowman said. Pirri played one game with Chicago last season before being sent to the minors where he had 12 goals and 31 assists in his first year as a professional. He has little fantasy value at this time.

Interesting stuff to read.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Fire
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Arizona Wildcats
Pirri huh?

It will be interesting to see what Bowman does this summer...he has definitely set us up for some cap flexibility (with help from the NHL raising the cap), and now it is time to use it to good use..

Re-sign Frolik, Campoli, get some tough forwards and a good #2 center and Im good (Well I can dream anyway...)

Unfortunately, I cannot read the article...Kinda small still, isn't he? With all of the skill this kid is reported to possess (we didn't see much of him at the NHL speed this season), it sounds as if he'll be one of our top three centers.

I'd much rather have Sharp slotted back or a more legit, consistent center added for the #2 spot than rely on a guy who has played a whopping one game.

Hrm... if that is so, then that would imply a 3rd line slot to start with, and possibly Bolland either put in at 2nd line (by default) or more likely trade bait.

You can't put a skill guy on the 4th line and get any idea what they are going to be like.

Edit:

Ok, working with the cap figures .... Brad Richards... hrm.. ok, well you know actually in thinking about it... it would probably be a better idea to have a go for Tim Connolly -basically a playmaker, not a big goal scorer -more of an assist guy -and currently only 29. If you could keep the cap hit about what it is (about mid 4's) and might be able to get an upgrade winger - both for the cap hit of what Richards might cost.

Defence- well, there is a problem to solve- isn't there? Hrm... well will leave that one for now.

Edited again: All right I think I might be more sold on Brooks Laich and a defenceman (tba).
