Question on "The Warriors"

So, I watched this movie for the first time. I enjoyed it, but how the hell do you come up with that premise. Did New York really have that many weird gangs patrolling the streets? Also, were these guys world class athletes. They ran and fought for an entire night. I mean you got to get a little winded.

I was trying to get real life experience during that time. I wasn't born yet. But, I do appreciate your post on its premise.

The Wanderers is another really good NY gang movie that seems to get forgotten.

NY gangs did not wear Broadway style costumes. It was a fantasy movie. I saw it opening night and enjoyed it, my GF was frightened and swore off NYC forever.

Apparently she thought roaming gangs of Broadway homos where going to kill her. I married another woman.

I was pretty confident on that. But, was it that many gangs per so many blocks? I know New York was a mess in the 70's with crime and drugs. By the way, I would probably be more scared of some dude's with painted faces then dude with some rip jeans and shirtless.
