Joe Frazier was one of those personalities and talents that made me love boxing. His fights are legendary and pro boxing owes him a lot (too bad they never gave back to him what he gave). Def one of my all time favs. Had one of the best left hooks eeeeeeever!!!

I thought for sure Ali would go first.

I love that Joe Kicked Ali's ass in that one fight after how shitty Ali treated him leading up to it.

Quite obvious you do not know the full history of that fight. Joe won that fight but it was an extremely close fight. Joe Frazier spent all most two weeks in the hospital after that fight due to the damage Ali did to him. Joe clinched the deal when he caught Ali with that vicious left hook and knocked Ali down.

Thought I would just add that to the discussion....

One of the first boxing matches I watched with my Dad was Frazier and Ali. Dad bet me a dollar on the winner, but didn't let me know the fight was a re-broadcast.

My pop got my little brother and I boxing gloves. I think I might have been 8 and my brother 5. I used to pound my little brother until the day that Dad knelt behind the little guy and held his wrists as I pummelled my bro. Dad blocked all my hay-makers and then WHAM, he hit me with a jab that knocked me on my ass so hard, I was stunned. Unhurt, but I learned a lesson.

Typing this makes me remember how much I miss my old man.

RIP Joe and Dad

sigh

I watched the fight. Ali definitely landed far more punches, but joe just shrugged that shit off until he got his opportunity.

Absolutely, he picked his spot and took it fair and square. All three of their fights were great fights and Ali was not the clear winner in those last 2, could of went either way.

Surprisingly Smokin Joe couldn't do anything with young George Foreman.

Hell Ali couldn`t do much with young George either. Foreman nearly killed Ali...some say he has.

I miss that era of fighting. These guys were legends and amazing in the ring. Real hatred btw Frazier and Ali also.

The Frazier and Ali fights are my favorite in boxing history. I know it`s lame and not important but I have to wonder if Ali will honor Frazier and attend the service. He should...he owes it to one of the guys that made Ali who he is.

Ali made a statement before Joe died, and said he was praying for his recovery.

Good for him. I know they tried to settle their differences over the last years (both were a bit stubborn and I can`t blame them 2 beat up old men who were damaged physically and somewhat mentally by the sport they loved..and somewhat used). I am going to be just as upset when Ali passes on. I loved both for different reasons.

Frazier could have whored his name out like Foreman after he retired. He probably should have in some cases. I believe he said he regrets not doing so since he squandered a lot of his money and made bad investment mistakes. Besides trying to make a silly come back in the early 80`s I think guys like Frazier showed a lot of respect to the sport. He deserved better before he passed away. Pro boxing in general owes the guy a lot.

I would still put his left hook up against anyone.

It is a very sad day in the boxing world losing one of the true greats of the sport. Frazier did more than any other heavyweight and your right, that Left was just nasty.

God bless you Frazier and your family. Thanks for giving us all those highlights!

I don't think Ali gets around to well these days, I could be wrong though.

I got into boxing at a young age since my grandfather is a huge fan of the sport. My father took his dad and brothers to the fights at the old forum in Los Angeles. Got seats around the 3rd row. While sitting there...an entourage showed up right in front of them. All these guys in suits and hats just blocking everything. my grandfather was getting a little miffed until the guy sitting right in front of him turned around to apology for blocking his view when they came in. It was Ali. My grandfather went balistic to be sitting and talking with Mr. Clay and Ali signed some of his religious pamphlets they had with them. So, a few pics and autographs later, my grandfather was not to bothered for missing some of that fight.

I wish I was alive when those fights happened. God I miss boxing. Outside of Manny no one interests me. Even in the 90s boxing was good but now it sucks.

Beautiful stuff. That took a lot for Ali to show up and do what he did.

Sent a little goose bump down my spine. I don't know why I feel such a connection to these legends of the ring. Not as if I ever met them in person or really knew them. Not sure if it what they left me in entertainment memories or how fascinated I was with pro-boxing when I was younger and the stories behind these guys lives and their careers before during and after. I miss boxing and these guys remind me of the art form which boxing once was in the heavyweight division. There have been great fighters after that hay day and certainly before it also but as far as character and passion and the art form and promotion I don't think any era has or ever will come close.

It's a travesty that pro boxing has been ruined at the heavy weight level by corruption and poor promotions. I am happy MMA has found success but I don't personally enjoy it. I don't find that I have any connection to the fighters nor do I find the tittle divsions (esp the heavyweight) hold much prestige or social and cultural influence that something like the Heavyweight boxing tittles once held. And frankly i find the fighting to be dull and based on luck sometimes. It's not the same art form and certainly not the same sport (that's obviously the key).

But hey we still have manny pacquiao. That guys entertaining as hell and a fucking damn fine fighter.

Does Ali even know where he is at this point? I mean I feel bad for him because I feel like his estate likes to parade him out for these events for some reason. If I was in his position I don't know what I'd want to do, but I don' think traveling all over the place would be one of them. He's still at sporting events commemorating things and stuff.

I just watched the best fight of all time again. The thrilla in manilla. For those who have never seen it you have to watch it. Little known fact...ali was about to cut his gloves before joes corner did. No one won that fight in my opinion...joe was fighting blind..ali was fighting on his last breath. Both would have been killed in the 15th. Ali fell to the ground after standing up to raise his arms no way he would have been able to take another hit. Nor would have joe.

What a fight. What a battle. What a piece of sport history. There will never be a fight like that ever again in any sport.
